3. Discovering Magic

"Megan!" snapped Mrs Johnston pulling me out of my thoughts about the magic school. "You need to-" she was suddenly cut off by someone knocking on the door.

I checked the clock and gulped when I saw that it read eleven o'clock. Minerva McGonagall was here.

"Answer the door." Mrs Johnston told me although she didn't sound as angry as usual in fact she sounded confused. Probably because no one ever visits the orphanage.

I leapt to my feet and rushed to the door. I took a deep breath before pulling open the door.

The sight of the woman standing on the doorstep shocked me. She was wearing an emerald green cloak which I realized was the same colour of the ink on my letter. Her hair was drawn back onto a tight bun and she was wearing square glasses. The look in her eyes was rather severe.

"Hello," I said shyly.

She then seemed to look me up and down taking in my appearance. I was quite thin and not overly tall. I was wearing tatty second hand clothes. I had long black hair and green eyes. And finally I had a mysterious lightning bolt shaped scar on my forehead. Her eyes seemed to lock onto my scar.

"You must be Megan Potter. Happy birthday by the way," she said. "I am Minerva McGonagall but you may call me Professor Mcgonagall. May I come in?"

"Of course Professor," I replied stepping of the doorway and leading her into the lounge room. Where she took a seat.

Mrs Johnston walked in and froze when she saw McGonagall's odd appearance. "Who would you like to see?" she asked warily.

"I need to speak with Megan," Mcgonagall replied "In private." she tacked on as an after thought.

"Of course well I'll just be leaving then," Mrs Johnston said staring at me as she left the room.

"I suppose you got my letter," She queried me.

"Yes."

"Have you packed."

"No," she frowned.

"Why not? I would think you would be glad to be out of this dump."

"I can't go to the magic school." I said.

"She didn't tell you that you couldn't go did she?" she asked angrily, obviously referring to Mrs Johnston.

"No. I haven't even told her but I can't go, I don't have any money."

"Of course you have money,"she said "you don't really think your parents wouldn't leave you anything. Go and get your things I'll tell Mrs Johnston that we're going."

I nodded before running off up the stairs. I couldn't believe it McGonagall had known my parents. I wondered how she had known who I was just by looking at my scar. I decided I would ask her about it later.

I walked into my room and wondered if I would ever see it again, not that I would really want to come back. I pulled a small backpack out from under my bed and put my few belongings inside. The only things I owned were a couple of pairs of tatty clothing, a pair of old, dirty sneakers which I was wearing, the note that was found on the doorstep with me when I was a baby and of course my letter from Hogwarts. I quickly put all my things inside my bag before I slung it over one shoulder. I ran back down the stairs noticing all the other children frowning at me, wondering where I was going.

McGonagall saw me come down and walked over to me. "Is that all you have?" I nodded in reply. "Come on then," she said before walking out the front door.

I rushed out the door behind her following her as walked down the street before turning into a dead end street.

"This is a dead end you know."

"Yes I know. Now grab onto my arm and no matter what don't let go. I am going to apparate us to Diagon Alley."
