He's always over looked.
She's always ignored.
He's always the last to know.
She's always the last one picked.
They don't know what it's like to feel wanted first by everyone. They don't know what a relationship is like. They have few friends. They rarely ever sit with a group at lunch. They never talk to friends in the halls. They never answer questions in class even if they are the smartest in that class. They never ask questions because they feel others will judge. And when they do answer a question everyone is shocked. They didn't know the quiet one was so smart.
It's because they are underestimated. They are thought as nothing. They aren't an outcast, they are simply just ignored. Everyone thinks they are different because they don't talk to many people. Everyone thinks they aren't smart since they don't socialize. Everyone thinks they have problems because they sit alone at lunch.
He's no different than you. He drinks water and eats like the rest of us. He sleeps like the rest of us. He does homework like the rest of us. He's exactly like you and me, but everyone makes him seem either a lot scarier or a lot stranger than the rest of us.
She's just like everyone. She shops at the same stores we do. She buys cute clothes like we do. She drinks the same coffee like we do. She wonders about the same things we do. She likes the cute boy like everyone else does. She fails a test every now and then just like the rest of us. She has a very small group of secluded friends like some of us. She knows a lot of people, just like the rest of us.
They don't always need to be quiet and shy. Sometimes the people who are underestimated are popular. Sometimes they are the rebels. You didn't expect the mean girl to have insecurities. You didn't expect the popular girl to have home problems and friends who don't really like her. You didn't expect the rebel to care about school and other people. You didn't expect him to not smoke or drink. You didn't expect the jock to lose his rhythm. You didn't expect the super smart girl to fail the test. You didn't expect the queen bee to not want to hang out with her friends. You didn't expect the rule breaker goes to church. You don't know a person until you actually know they person. They never seem to be out and about. They never hang out with friends. Everyone thinks they are anti-social. In reality, they just like the peace of being alone. No one expects them to play sports. "They just don't seem like the athletic type." No one expects them to hang out with anyone. "They just don't have a lot of friends." No one expects them to treat others with respect. "They just are too badass and care free."
You never expect someone to do something, but they always end up doing it anyways. They are always looked at differently by everyone. They surprise you. Just when you think they couldn't care about you any less than they do, they ask how your day has been. Just when you think they aren't going to make the team, they end up being the team captain. Just when you think that they aren't going to help you out, they give you the notes you missed. Just when you think that she's going to bully you, she simply asks where you got your shoes. Everyone expects the underestimated to be something.
But here's the thing about the underestimated: they always prove you wrong.
