BLOG TWENTY-THREE: THE ATTENTION SEEKER

They always interrupt everything.

They never consider what others have to say. It's always about them. It's always about what they have to say. It's never about what you have to say. It's never about what they want to hear. Whatever they want to say, it needs to be said at once. Well newsflash, whatever you have to say will be no different than what you have to say after I finish what I say. What anyone says for that matter. It's not less important than what anyone else has to say. We all get a turn. But the intruder, they never know how to wait.

They need to be the one who shares first. Heaven forbid they are allowed to interrupt everyone else, but if anyone interrupts them, it's hell on earth. They don't care about other people. They don't care about what they have to say, what they are thinking, they don't care for any of it. It's all about them. The conversation has to be focused on them and if it isn't, they do everything they can to bring it back to them. They need to be the center of attention. And if they aren't, they will leave you to find someone who will focus on them. Remember, they don't care about your feelings.

They only care about themselves. At times though, you can't blame them. They do it because they have to. It doesn't make sense. It sounds crazy. But I've learned that if they don't interrupt you to speak, if they don't have everyone's undivided attention, if they don't speak about themselves, they will go crazy. I know many attention seekers. I use to be friends with one. At first I thought she was crazy. All the clothes and makeup and tell tale stories and lies. I thought she was doing it for the attention, to be popular, to be loved by the people "who matter." Over time though, I realized it's in their nature.

There doesn't always have to be a reason. It's no different than how the queen bee acts. Or how the jock or the bad boy acts. It's simply who they are. You can't blame them. It's like the saying goes, "old habits die hard." And after doing it for so long, they don't even realize what they are doing. Maybe they feel the need to seek attention because they don't get enough attention at home. Maybe they feel the need to interrupt people because nobody listens to them.

When you don't give them the attention they seek, they abandon you. They leave you. They want someone who will love them. They want someone who will listen. They want someone who will care for them because they don't have anybody else. To get the attention they don't deserve, but so desperately want, they might say things about you. They might spread lies. They might become someone they are not. But that's the thing about attention. It eventually gives you a reputation. And it's not always a good one.

Sometimes, the attention eats you alive until you are forgotten once again.
