"so, you plan on moving to los angeles after graduation?" i asked to make sure i got it right.
"yep. but it's not like i'm never coming back to omaha. it's my home, i love it here but i want to pursue my career in la, you know what i mean" he explained.
"yeah, i definitely do know you mean. i'm planning on moving to new york and hoping to become a future model" i said as i thought back to when i was five i seen my first ever victoria secret fashion show. i remember the date perfectly, it was december 21st, 2001.
it was the first time i actually knew what i wanted to be. although, i wanted to be a part-time princess and a part-time victoria secret model.
"out of everything, why that?" he asked in a way that kinda through me off.
"i don't know. you know it was stu--"
"kids, dinners ready" my mom called from downstairs.
i got up and walked out the room and headed downstairs.
i grabbed the ingredients from my moms hands and set them on the table then went to grab three plates from the cupboard.
once i served my mom, sammy, and myself, i sat down and a thought instantly came to my head.
"mama, es abuela viniendo a mi graduación?"(mom, is grandma coming to my graduation?) i asked in spanish.
"yo soy no por supuesto, pero yo será llamada su" (i am not sure, but i will call her) she replied back taking a bite out of her taco.
"bueno" (okay) i replied back then took out my taco but in mid-bite i saw sammy looking at me in amazement.
"qué? i-i mean, what?" i corrected myself since i got so caught up in talking to my mom in spanish that i forgot sammy doesn't speak spanish.
"you never told me you could speak spanish" he said still shock and amazement.
"you never asked" i said then finally took a bite out of my food.
"qué acerca de tiá Xiomara (see-o-ma-ra)?" (what about aunty Xiomara) i asked wiping my mouth.
"tú saber eres tiá no lo haría perder graduación" (you know you're aunt wouldn't miss your graduation) she said then stood up and went to go put her plate in the sink but i stood up and grabbed it from her, making her sit back down in the chair.
"yo saber" (i know) i replied and took her plate to the kitchen and set it in the sink then sat back down to eat my food.
"not to make fun or be disrespectful, but do you watch novellas and listen to spanish music?" he asked with a curious face.
"now that's just stereotypical and no i don't but if you don't like that kind of stuff then i suggest not coming to my house for about two weeks because if my grandma is here, you will feel like mexican after she gone" i said telling the truth.
"what do you mean?" (betta make up your mind, what do you mean?) sammy asked which now means that i have to go into deep explanation about my ex but i guess i was kind of asking for it.
"well, i dating this one guy back in freshman year and long-story short, we dated then after a few months of us going out, i finally let him meet my family and by the end of the night, he was a sombrero and listening to salsa music" i said remembering that day as if it was yesterday.
"what happened to you guys?" he asked looking more curios.
"uh, well, he got more busier with sports and school then he eventually moved school and i got more busier with soccer and track" i said getting up and walking over to put my plate in the sink.
after sammy finished eating, me and him washed the dishes then went back into my room to talk some more.
"uh, before we went downstairs, did i offend you by my question?" he asked.
"a lit--" i was cut off by my phone ringing on my bedside table.
"hello?" i said into the phone then gave sammy a finger, telling him to hold on.
i got up and started to worry when i heard flora crying on the other end.
"babygirl, what's wrong?" i asked her but got crying in response.
"can i come over?" she asked and without hesitation, i tell her she could and we hang up.
"you know, i should probably start heading home" sammy said and i knew that he had heard me and flora's conversation.
"yeah, i'll walk you out" i said then put on a sweater and shoved on my shoes.
"you know, why don't i just drive you home" i said then grabbed my keys off the key holder.
"what about your friend" he asked.
"i'll just have to be super quick" i said then walked over to my mom to tell her that i was leaving for a bit.
i walked outside and got inside my car then drove off to his house once he got inside.
*
We pulled up to his house at exactly nine p.m.
i got out to walk him to the door.
i walked up to the porch with sammy then stood there lightly smiling since we just had a whole laughing session in the car and the stuff we were would probably only be funny to us since it just a bunch of random stuff that didn't even make sense.
"i had fun tonight" we said in sync then laughed at each other.
we settled down then he spoke up.
"we should do something together again" he said smiling a toothy smile at me.
"yeah, we should" i agreed.
"well, i better get going before flora rips off my head" i joked then started to back to my car.
"kayden, wait!" he said and i turned back around to look at him.
"thanks a lot for tonight and tell your mother she makes a mean taco" he said and smiled.
"bye sammy" i said then walked to my car and hopped in.
i waited until he got inside then i drove off.
