“Ok, so Annie and Jonah, Johanna and Beetee are going to the Capitol. They’re the oldest and Jonah and Annie can’t be separated, obviously.” Gale says
“Once a soldier, always a soldier.” Katniss grins
“So that means, you, Tobias, Delly, Katniss and Peeta are all escaping.” He continues, carrying on as if Katniss hadn’t spoken.
I nod and Tobias takes over.
“Ok, are the others leaving soon?” He asks
“Oh, they left late last night.” Delly says.
I have to say everyone seems very calm, though we are pulling what must be the world’s most dangerous stunt. They sound as if they have been planning this their whole lives. When I ask them if that’s the case, they laugh.
“No, we never expected two black-clad, tattooed, runaway guardian angels to come and rescue us.” Delly grins.
“But we used to be rebel leaders.” Gale says.
“And we hunt and we won the Hunger Games.” Katniss adds.
“Speak for yourself!” Delly laughs. The atmosphere’s happy but –
“Peeta, what’s up?” I ask, realising he’s been quiet since the plan’s details started to be organised.
“You said it was a long way to Dauntless. Real or not real?” He asks sadly
“Real.” Tobias says “It will be a day or so of walking if there aren’t any Amity trucks about to sneak us into the city.”
“But it’ll be OK. Nothing too hard.” I reassure him
Tobias and I now understand the real or not real game. We know it helps Peeta understand things in his mind. We’ve heard all about the reaping, the arena breakout, the rebellion, Peeta being hijacked, the Capitol, the President, Effie, Haymitch, Finnick, Prim, and Rue. Everything. But here’s something I don’t think either Tobias or myself saw coming.
“Then I can’t go.” Peeta says and pulls his trouser leg up over his knee revealing a fake one.
“Over my dead body!” Katniss says firmly “ You fought a war, and entered the Arena on that, so you can walk for a day and fight a little in Dauntless.”
Tobias and I both prickle
“Dauntless life is pretty tough.” Tobias says stiffly
“Compared to the arenas?” Katniss asks sharply and Tobias has to agree that Dauntless is probably easier than life in the Games.
I finger the scar on my ear and look at Tobias. After seeing my family fall apart and thinking back to Tobias’s childhood I beg to differ that the Games are harder than Dauntless life.
