“Dear Tobias,

I want you to know everything. Everything I know, I’ll tell you now. I wish with all my heart I could tell you all of this face to face but I’m no good with words.

I went to see Caleb in Erudite. He told me that he made the device that made it looked like my heart had stopped. He saved me. I love my brother and he’s my only real family left. He’s in Erudite though, so he can’t always be there when I need him.

Then, when we fought, I realised something. You are my family, Tobias. But I needed someone and I couldn’t go to you. I went with Gale to find Susan in Abnegation. She showed me my grandma’s photo. It was Johanna. From Amity and District 12.

But this letter isn’t about then, it’s about now. And it isn’t about them, it’s about us.

Tobias, I love you more than anything, more than life itself. You are my whole world. But I need you to trust me. I need to take risks, live my life.

Saying that, I only want to live that life if you are in it. I let you down and lied to you, and I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry. Seeing you, when we fought, hearing what you said. Well, it broke my heart.

I couldn’t live without you, Tobias. You are my future, but I need a link to my past.

Love Tris. X”

I fold my letter and slide it under the door to Tobias’s apartment. Then I go back to my dorm and slide into bed, into a fitful and nightmare-filled sleep.
