“Fine,” He says “but you aren’t!”

Caleb takes my hand in his and I yank it back. He looks at my ripped, stained jeans and bleeding hands and angry expression. He puts his arms around me around me and holds me tighter when I try to wriggle away. Finally, I relax against him and hug him back.

“I’ve missed you Beatrice.” He says

“I’ve missed you too.” I say, my words muffled by Caleb’s shirt.

When we step back I have to ask him.

“Why did you do it?” I ask

“Side with Jeanine?” He asks and I nod

“I’ll tell you a secret.” He says and we sit down on the steps. “You know when you were given that serum and you thought you’d died?”

I nod, remembering. The machine I was hooked up to stopped registering my heartbeat and Peter carried me to Tobias.

“I remember.” I say

“I made the device that made your machine look like your heart had stopped.” He says.

I stare, open-mouthed. My brother didn’t BETRAY me! He got Jeanine Matthews to let him in to her secrets, and then he saved my life. I throw my arms around him and he hugs me back, hard.

“I’ve missed you so much! And I hated it that you hated me!” He says. “I’ve felt so bad. I lied to you, but it was only to save you. You’re my sister and I love you. I asked you to meet me here so I could explain.” I asked you here to explain.

I start to grin, happy to know the truth.

“And I love you Caleb.” I smile and add jokingly, “even if you are a hopeless nerd!”

He grins

“And you’re a Dauntless rebel who is spontaneous and stupid!”

I laugh

“Sounds familiar! Tobias said exactly that and-“

I scream

“TOBIAS!”

I hug Caleb and goodbye. I break into a sprint. No, no, no!
