We’re on the train heading towards Abnegation sector. Jeanine’s army wiped out most of Abnegation but there are still some people I can go to.

An hour later I’m stood outside Susan’s front door with Gale explaining the last week. From escaping to breaking up with Tobias.

“So you see,” I finish “I want to find my grandparents and I just wondered-“

“If I knew anything?” Susan finishes and I nod.

Over tea she gets out an old photo album and flips through until she gets to a picture and she slides it out.

“Your grandma is still in the city-sort of.” She says and hands me the picture.

Gale and I look at it.

“JOHANNA!” We screech together.

“But you saw her in 12! How did you not recognise her?” Gale asks incredulously

“I just didn’t! OK?” I snap. “I was busy and stressed and tired. Plus she was looking at me like I was a murderer so I didn’t spend too much time staring into her eyes.”

Gale and I both know Johanna. We sit for hours piecing together her story. It seems she was in District 7 and was reaped for the Games. She must have had my mother very young. After the Games my mum was adopted into a Dauntless family and Johanna stayed on the outskirts of town, in Amity, in case she had to leave and go back to Panem. She did, when the 75th reaping came round she thought it would be a good time to flee. The reaping meant chaos in her District and she had lost the respect of her faction. I remembered when she said Amity should get involved with the conflict in the city. She had lived recently in Panem.  I must have met her when she was in Amity just before she went back to Panem.

“Now the hunger games have been reintroduced do you think Johanna will come back?” I ask hopefully.

Delly lays a hand on my shoulder.

“I don’t think so Tris.” She says sadly.

“Yeah, she’s too old to be reaped now.” Gale says

“I’m sorry Tris.” Susan says apologetically.

“Why?” I ask “In a day I’ve found out I have a cool, brave gran with a double identity who’s survived two arenas and an uprising. I’ve met her twice and never known and now I have all her history.” I say “Thank you Susan.”

I hug her and she smiles.

“I’m so glad you’re happy! Good luck with Tobias!” Susan calls as Gale and I leave.

“What about you and Delly?” I ask Gale on the train back to Dauntless.

“If you love something set it free.” He says sighing. “Delly and Uriah love each other and who am I to stand in the way of true love?”
