As I run to the entrance of Dauntless I see a figure standing at the top of the steps. Tobias. I run up to him and hug him.
“Oh Tobias! Caleb isn’t a traitor! He isn’t a liar! He saved my life! Tobias isn’t that great!?!” I say excitedly.
Tobias pulls me off him.
“Caleb might not be a traitor and a liar but you are Tris!” He says angrily.
“Look, I’m sorry but-“ I start and I hear the big double doors swing open.
Tobias shoves me hard in the shoulder and I stagger back.
“You lied to me Tris!” Tobias yells “I trusted you and you lied to me! You said you loved me but-“ Angry tears glisten in his eyes, threatening to spill over. “but you don’t! If you did you wouldn’t have lied. I love you Tris, but it’s over. We’re done.” He shouts.
Tears roll down his face and I wonder if I’ve ever seen him cry. I have, I remember, when we put our hands to the glass as I was been taken away to be murdered in Erudite. My heart feels like it’s breaking as I see the bravest person I know cry and turn away from me, hiding his tears, embarrassed.
“Now seems a good time to say something.” Delly says and turns to Gale. “I’m in love with Uriah.”
I take off down the halls of the compound and find an empty store room. It’s all too much. Why doesn’t love really end happily? Why does everything have to go wrong? I sit and cry until my lungs and throat burn. Then I hear a voice.
“Can I stay?” Gale asks.
