“I. I wanted to star by saying. By saying that I’m sorry.” Tobias stutters. He smiles wanly “You aren’t the only one who isn’t too good with words.”

He sighs.

“I suppose I didn’t want to let you go in case you didn’t come back to me. Marcus told me that if he wouldn’t let me do something it was for my own good. Well, I thought keeping you here was for your own good. It wasn’t. I was keeping you here with me like a prisoner.”

I gasp

“NO! Tobias! It wasn’t like that!”

“Ssh.” He says “Listen, this is important, Tris. I know Marcus was wrong. But I still just want you to be safe. I felt like the only way to keep you safe was to protect you myself. But you’re brave and deadly smart. You can look after yourself. I know you can. I love you and I’ll give you your freedom. You want a link to your past? I’ll support you the whole way but I won’t be so overprotective. I love you so much.” He strokes my face with his hand and kisses my forehead.

I put my head on his shoulder and we sit there, together on his bed.
