Chapter 2

Katniss and Gale lead us through the woods to a fence. They both put their heads close to the fence and smile at each other, as if sharing a private joke.

“Not on.” They say together and laugh

Gale swings a burlap sack over his shoulder and starts to climb the fence shortly followed by Katniss, quiver across her back and bow in hand. They drop down lightly on the other side and wait expectantly for us to follow. Tobias puts his hands on my hands and gently places them on the fence.

“Climb.” He says.

I climb and climb until I sit astride the top, waiting for Tobias. This is his worst nightmare. He’s terrified of heights and this fence is very tall. He catches me up and I can see the sweat running down his forehead, his pale face, his heavy breathing. I can’t take a hand off the fence to squeeze his and tell him it’s ok. I bend over and kiss his wet forehead instead. I start to climb down and look up as I’m about halfway to the ground. Tobias is climbing steadily, which is good. He looks down to smile shakily at me. I smile back encouragingly and lose concentration. My foot slips and for a minute I hang by my hands until I hook my foot back into the fence. It’s enough for Tobias.

“TRIS!” He shouts, panic in his voice.

He scrambles down the fence and hits the solid ground a few seconds after I do. He hugs me close and I can feel his rapid heartbeat through his shirt. He kisses me and I assure him I’m ok.

“Good.” He breathes as Katniss and Gale look on with raised eyebrows.

“Sorry about the climb.” Gale apologises

“Yeah, a year or so ago you could have just crawled through a hole in the fence but then that damn Romulus Thread came. He’s gone now. All the peacekeepers are. And good riddance. Now we have a mayor, Plutarch Heavensbee, and the government is much fairer.” Katniss explains

I nod, taking it all in. We walk through the small village in silence until we come to a grander part. We walk up a long drive and Gale pushes open a large gate with the letters “V V” on.  We walk up to a pretty looking house and Katniss pushes the door open.

A living room full of people greets me. A pretty girl sat on a sofa by a vacant looking blonde boy with a paintbrush in his hand. An old man with little glasses, a tough looking lady and a beautiful lady sat with a baby with golden hair, all sat in armchairs.

“Everyone, this is Tris and Tobias.” Katniss says

“Hi.” I mumble shyly and edge towards Tobias.

Most people smile at us though the tough looking lady just looked us up and down and the blonde boy doesn’t even look up.

“That’s Peeta.” Gale says, pointing to the blonde boy.

“That’s Beetee, Johanna, Annie and little Jonah.” He says, pointing to the old man, tough lady, and the mother and baby in turn. Gale goes to the pretty girl who he hasn’t yet introduced and takes her hand, sitting down beside her.

“And this is Delly.” He finishes
