16 ❣ The Friend Label

"I heard you stormed out yesterday. Did something happen?" I wanted to ask if it was related to his dad and Solji's mom, but decided to keep my mouth shut. Sometimes we just have to be really careful about bombs that could explode any time soon.

"It's nothing. I just needed to head home early," he told me.

Lies.

I knew for a fact that he hates returning home and tries to avoid it as much as he can. To suddenly say he needed to be home early was something out of the norm. What was he hiding?

But as much as I wanted to ask, I just nodded understandingly and said, "Oh, okay. I thought something happened. Well, I better get back to work and-"

"Wait," Jihoon stopped me, holding onto my wrist, which was gradually getting better. "I lied. I'm sorry. I should have been honest with you."

A triumphant smile made its way onto my face but I tried to hide it as much as possible. I was glad Jihoon knew that he could trust me and tell me anything. I took a seat across him and asked, "Yes? Is something wrong?"

"Solji texted me yesterday. She told her mom about what happened the other day in front of the restaurant. Now her mom is rethinking about marrying my dad. I should be happy about it, but I don't. I guess it's because I know if my dad marries that woman, his attention would be drawn away from me and I would be free," he said, but there was a voice at the back of my mind telling me that it was a lie.

I think Jihoon, deep down, still cared for his dad and wanted him to be happy, even if Jihoon wouldn't be the cause of his happiness. Jihoon wanted his dad to at least have someone that would make him happy, because he wasn't able to.

"Jihoon, I'm sorry about that. It was my fault. I should have been slapped by her so that this wouldn't have happened," I told him, lowering my head, feeling guilty.

Jihoon shook his head. "No, don't be sorry. I needed to protect you. I wouldn't tolerate if you got hurt because of my soon-to-be-step-sister."

I looked up at him, speechless from his words. "Do you..."

"Yes, I mean it," he answered before I could even ask the question. Does Jihoon have a superpower? Could he read minds? "Remember what I said, Min Jae. You're an angel. Angels are precious, so you are equally precious. I will do whatever I can to protect you because you are precious to me."

I smiled at him, feeling my stomach flutter all of a sudden. I must be hungry. "Well, thank you for being honest with me, Jihoon. You know it really means a lot to me because you trust me a lot to tell me all of these problems. But what happens if Solji really becomes your stepsister?"

"Well, someone has to teach her manners, right?" Jihoon grinned.

I grinned back. "Well, it's not all bad then, Jihoon."

"You're right, it isn't. As long as I have you in my life, nothing is bad," he told me before standing up. "Well, I have to go now. It's Saturday and I have my part-time job too."

"Are you only working on Saturdays?" I asked before he left.

"Yeah, sometimes I work on Sundays," he told me. "I have to go now or I'll be late. See you later, Min Jae!"

I waved goodbye and continued on with working.
