********************************************************************************"My life is as boring as a rock," I told a friend, answering her countless nosy questions. I didn't realize back then that those few words would backfire against me. Elizabeth and I were talking on phone, and I hung up saying, "I have to go now. I'll be late for my night shift." I grabbed my handbag keeping a mental note to fix its zipper, wore my black worn out watch, and checked my look for a final time.
Standing in front of my bedroom mirror, I inspected my dark jeans and blue long sleeved shirt trying to remember when I bought them. Following my daily routine, I walked to the door of my flat, wore my white tennis shoes that looked like a nurse's, and was ready for work. I checked my watch one last time before I locked the door. I took a deep breath as I trudged down the staircase skipping the wrecked steps I already knew by heart. Looking for a cab, I luckily noticed one parked in front of the apartment. The driver was inside, and when I asked if he was waiting for someone, he answered, "No, ma'am, I was just buying something. Where do you want to go?"
I recited the familiar address of my workplace, entered the car, and sat silently watching the pedestrians and shops during the drive. After a few minutes, I noticed streets I've never seen before, and started wondering if the driver was lost or was just taking shortcuts. He knows what he's doing, I told myself comfortingly. With another peculiar turn, I realized that this could never be the right way. "Excuse me, I think you're heading in a wrong direction," I pointed out.
"Don't worry ma'am, I know where I'm going," he answered. His cold rough voice sent a shiver through my spine. Does he really know where he's heading? In a few minutes, we reached a dark scary neighborhood making my worries worsen. I didn’t know whether I should scream for help or ask him what this place was.
When I finally gathered enough courage, I asked, "Where are you taking me?"
"To where your new life will begin," he answered. His reply terrified me, my blood froze, and my heart stopped for a second. My eyes grew wide as I imagined all the possibilities, all the things he might do to me. I knew my life wasn't a perfect one, but the new life he seemed to be dragging me to, didn’t seem any better.
When he finally stopped, he hurried to my door, opened it, and pulled me out, not giving me a chance to even think of escape. I looked around me inspecting the neighborhood, where poverty was written on the walls. It was dark; many street lights were dim, and others were flickering. There were no humans to be seen, no one to help me escape, just a few scurrying mice to witness my abduction. The driver pulled me towards a building I couldn't identify.
We stood in front of the large door as he pounded it forcefully. The door rose upwards revealing a wide shouldered man who welcomed my abductor with a wicked smile. My eyes traveled scrutinizing the place. It looked like an old garage, except for the fact that there were no cars. Instead, piles of old furniture and boxes rested carrying huge amounts of dust. In the center of the garage was a large table in which a group of people sat around. Their fancy suits and dresses made them look out of place.
Once the driver pulled me towards them, I didn’t resist. I just simply couldn’t. My courage was already drained out by the whole situation. With every step, my heart skipped a beat, and my stomach was aching as if a hurricane was inside. The place was damp and filled with dust, which in turn filled my lungs. Being asthmatic, I began coughing, every cough drawing the life out of me. I fell to my knees feeling my lungs tighten. I tried so hard to breath, but failed horribly. The image started fading, and the last thing I heard before everything became dark was several voices saying, "What have you done to her?! We told you get her alive!"
