"Breakfast's over. Y'all can go have free-time 'til your first activity," a ranger, whose name I discovered to be Rick, says. As I throw away my food, I grab packages of Pop Tarts as they fall from trays. I grab at least six packs of Pop Tarts, and then exit the building and walk towards the cabin to get my hoodie, and to deposit my new stash of Pop Tarts.
"Boo!" Brandon yells as I walk out of the cabin. I yelp and stumble to the side.
"Ugh you jerk! You gave me a heart attack. Don't ever do that again!" I yell.
"Did you get enough sleep last night grumpy pants?" he asks.
"Yes, I did. I just don't like people scaring me," I say glaring at him. When he looks at the ground to avoid my glare I look around for Max and Zoe. I see them at a picnic table we always used to hang out at last year. When I get there we chat, and then the bell rings. We head to our fist activity of the day.
A few minutes after dinner Rick comes up to the free-time area and shouts, "Everyone head down to the cafeteria and go inside. Sit at the tables and wait while I get the others."
"What the hell?" I ask looking at my friends. They shake their heads and shrug. Everyone runs for the cafeteria, obviously excited to get inside a building with AC. I look at my friends and say, "Last one there's a rotten egg!" I take off running, and when I stop by the doors Brandon's still up the hill.
"I am not running!" he calls down. I stick out my tongue and go inside. The twelve kids from our cabin sit together again, and when Rick enters we all look towards him.
"Children!" his voice booms through the room, and we all fall silent. "You and the children of the world are the last living humans. I hope you all thrive and don't kill each other. Fix the world and refill the earth with humans. Come together and kill the dead that walk. See you all in the afterlife. Good luck and goodbye." with that he disappears. I blink several times.
"Yo what was that?" some kid calls out.
"That was one awesome magic trick!" another calls out.
"Um, guys, that wasn't a magic trick," I tell Max, Zoe, Brandon, Kasey, and Brody.
"I know. I'm scared. What was with the 'kill the dead that walk'?" Kasey asks.
"I don't know," I say honestly. Then I remember the thing that attacked me and gasp, "Oh my God."
"What?" Brody asks seeing I've discovered something.
"The thing that attacked me was like a zombie, but smarter. That must be what he meant by 'the dead that walk'," I say.
"Someone needs to tell the whole place then," Brody says.
"Go up and tell them, Delilah," Kasey says.
"I don't think I'd explain very well," I say.
"Yes, you would," Brandon says.
"Just go do it," Zoe says.
"I don't want to," I say.
"Go do it, lover girl," Max whispers to me.
"I'll do it," I say glaring at Max. I walk up to where Rick was just a few moment ago, and I'm shaking with nerves. I almost get down, but Max mouths 'Lover girl' and stand where I am.
