Chapter Eight
Cali
Preston nodded his head and started laughing when I guessed Johnston. Asshole. They were all assholes.
"What did you say?" I asked, pulling out the chair across from him. Jay began unpacking the food, but I was to annoyed at Johnston to help.
Preston stopped laughing. "I said to lay off and you would call him back if you wanted." He gave me a nod and a small smile. He knew all about Johnston and wanted nothing more then for him to be out of our lives.
"Good job," I replied as I patted his head and walked over to the fridge to get some water.
"I'm confused," I heard Jay whisper to Preston. I turned around and looked at Jay. He turned towards me and had a puzzled look on his face. I hopped up and sat on the counter.
"I met Johnston one day in town," I said as I rolled my eyes. "We became friends, but then I made the mistake of letting him take me out to dinner. He's the most annoying ass ever and kind of a perv. I haven't seen him in a long time and I had been trying to avoid him."
I looked at Jay who just nodded his head. He wasn't smirking at me this time. Instead he wore a small, genuine smile. It was cute. I took a sip of water before continuing.
"Anyways, after I rejected him, he would show up here at random times. And if I wasn't here, he would sit at the table until I returned. Eventfully, Preston threatened to call the police unless he left me alone. The last time I saw him was when I had just pulled in and he was driving down the driveway. I got out of my car and Preston came to stand next to me as he drove away. Except he swerved and hit a tree with his car. He sat there for a few minutes before driving away."
Jay looked at me for a second to see if I was telling the truth. I nodded my and he started chuckling and Preston followed. I don't know why that was funny, but I'm glad my pathetic love life could make them laugh. I rolled my eyes again as I jumped off the counter and started making my way into the living room. But I stopped when I heard Preston shout wait.
I turned back around and walked into the kitchen. I crossed my arms over my chest and looked at him. He looked at me with a nervous expression and scratched the back of his neck.
"There's something else..." He was avoiding eye contact with me.
"What?"
I saw him glance over at Jay who was still seated at the table. Then he looked back at me, worried. Uh oh. I knew that look.
"Um...you left your phone here. And while you were gone, your mom called."
Oh god. I thought she got the point the last time she called. Guess not. Last time she had called, I had switched my voicemail greeting to one specifically with her. It said that if she called the number again, I would block her number. I almost threatened that I would call the cops and report her for harassment, but it didn't give me enough time.
"Shit..." I muttered under my breath as I pulled out the chair next to Jay. He was probably still confused but I didn't really care. Not now.
"Did you answer?"
His face turned pale white. He answered. Stupid boy.
"She kept calling and calling. I didn't know what to do. I'm sorry."
I took a deep breath. Something was always going wrong in my life. Nothing had gone right in a long time. And I was getting tired of living through shit.
"What did you say?"
"I told her she had the wrong number. She insisted she had the right one, but I kept saying I'd never heard of you. But she kept asking for Gra-"
