Chapter Thirteen
Cali
"Hey, I have to go into town to buy some things. And I'll probably just get some dinner there. But, um, what are you doing later?" Jay asked as I stepped onto the porch.
Did he seriously think I would have plans. I had two friends out here and both of them lived next to me. He was an idiot. I turned around and was eye level with him even though I was standing three steps above him.
"No...why?" I raised an eyebrow at him because I really didn't know where he was going.
"Great. I'll pick you up at nine." He winked and with that, he walked down the hill to his truck. He got in and drove down the driveway, out of sight.
Was this like a date? But where would we go on the Fourth of July? Did he find out? Was he planning something special? Oh god I hoped not. But yet I secretly hoped yes. Ugh. I was so confused.
A little after seven, I decided to take a shower before going wherever I was going with Jay. I soon learned to call outside the door before I walked out of the bathroom after taking a shower. He had already done it twice, so I didn't know when he would come up again. Thankfully he wasn't there and I could walk back to my bedroom in peace.
I put on some jean shorts, with a cute top and my cowboy boots. I spent some time on my hair but didn't bother with makeup. It was just Jay after all. No use getting dolled up.
A few minutes to nine, I heard that familiar tapping sound outside my window. It was how Jay got my attention at night if he wanted to talk. Eventfully he was going to break the window and I would be really mad. I opened the window and he whispered he would be over in a minute. I said okay as he closed the window. I don't know why he had to tell me that, but he did.
A minute later, I heard a knock on the bedroom door. I giggled to myself as I walked across the room to open it. He was standing out there in shorts and a T-shirt. He held his arm out and I looped my arm through. He was so weird. We walked out of my bedroom but took a left instead of a right. He led me down the hall and then into my bathroom.
"You had to pick me up to take me to my bathroom?" I said with a confused face and put a hand on my hip. That caused him to laugh his low, deep, sexy-
Hello? Earth to Cali?
His laugh was nice.
"You're a terrible date, you know that?"
I laughed a little. "Didn't know it was a date," I said as I stuck my tongue out at him. He walked over to the big window and opened it. He stuck his head out and looked up. He pulled his head back in a looked at me.
"You gotta trust me, okay?" Well what the hell did that mean? He couldn't say something cryptic like that and expect me to trust him.
"Um....Okay?" I said hesitantly. He grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the window. He climbed out and disappeared. I looked out but didn't know where he went. The hell?...
"Up here." He whispered. I looked up and he was sitting on the roof. He instructed me on how to climb out and he pulled my arm up as I joined him on the roof. We were both crazy. Nothing new.
"Okay, now whatever you do, don't look up." I nodded my head and he grabbed my hand and led to the center of the roof. You could see the whole farm from up here. I think I just found my new favorite spot. Jay told me to sit down, but close my eyes. He guided me until I was siting on the roof. I brought my knees to my chest and he told me to lean my head back, but keep my eyes closed.
"Okay, open."
I waited a few seconds before I opened. As soon as I did, tears welled in my eyes. Billions and billions of stars. That's all I saw. The sky was covered in them. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.
