Chapter Fifteen
Cali
He pulled away and I immediately met his eyes. Saying that that was the best kiss of my life was an understatement. Even though it was only for a few seconds, butterflies zoomed all over my stomach and shots of electricity were all over my body. Never had I ever experienced anything like it. It was so strange yet exciting.
But it was Jay. My friend. My rock. Nothing more. But that kiss definitely made it feel like something more.
Ugh! What happened to him not getting me? My mind is a traitor. My body too. Those damn butterflies and racing heart. He could probably hear my erratic heartbeat.
After a few minutes passed, I looked down at the saddle. And then did the only thing I knew how to do. I took off. It was what I did when I didn't know how to handle a situation. The horse started galloping and I could hear Jay behind me. But I took a sharp left, off on the short cut I use last time.
I saw something rustle in the branches of a tree up ahead. We got closer and suddenly, a big bird flew right in front of my horse. We missed it by maybe a millionth of a second. But my horse freaked out anyways.
The last thing I remember is being up in the air, before feeling pain shoot through my body just as everything went black.
'Mommy? I'm home!' I called up the stairs. I dropped my Disney princess back pack in the entry way and ran into the kitchen. I didn't see mom in there so I ran into the living room.
'Dom!' I said as I joined my brother on the couch. I thought he was just the coolest kid ever. He got to go to the middle school. Where all the big kids went. I was so jealous. I had to be in the baby elementary school.
'Where's mommy?' I asked him as I looked over his shoulder at what he was writing. There was a bunch of numbers all over the place. It was very confusing.
'I don't know. But she came in angry and started yelling.' He said and went back to his homework.
'Was she scary?' I asked him. Mommy could be scary sometimes, but Dom never looked scared. He was so brave.
'I'm not scared of anything. I think she went upstairs. Why?'
'She's taking me to the zoo. She promised me I could see a horse. I want to be a horse rider when I grow up.'
Dom nodded his head, not paying any attention to me. I heard rustling upstairs and then my moms voice. 'Gracie? I can't take you today. Sorry.'
That was it? She didn't come down to tell me? I hopped of the couch but Dom grabbed my arm.
'Don't. She might be angry.' He warned. I nodded my head and crawled back on the couch next to him. I cried quietly as Dom finished his homework. He put it away and gave me a hug. He was my best friend.
'What if she doesn't want us one day?'
'That will never happen, Grace. She loves us. And we have dad.'
He was right. 'But if she doesn't want us, will you be my mommy? Will you take of me?'
He smiled at me. 'Of course, Gracie.'
I thought I opened my eyes, but there was still only darkness. This was weird. And it wasn't right. I just had a dream that you're supposed to be able to wake up from. Not wake up in total darkness.
That dream was freaky too. It had been from when I was only seven years old. I remembered Dom's face perfectly. The way his blonde, curly head always sat, messily on his head. And his blue eyes that when he was older, could melt any girls heart. It was incredible how I could remember that day exactly.
Now I had to figure out how to wake up. I tried talking, but nothing came out. Why was I even asleep? I don't remember going to bed.
