I sat in the cafe, where I worked. Today was a really slow day. There were only 3 customers in the whole building. My coworker, Britt, sat next to me, talking up a storm. I just zoned her out. I looked over the coffeeshop, stopping and couldnt help but stare at one of our customers. His face was hidden by a newspaper, but something felt off about him...
"Cait, are you even listening to me?" Britt asked nudging me.
"What?" I replied.
"Seriously?"
"Sorry. I was joking, yes I was listening."
"What was I talking about then?"
"Um... how cute the guy you like is, even though you refuse to tell me who it is?"
"Lucky guess..." she scoffed, picking up a pot of coffee to fill up. She walked over to the man holding a newspaper. "More coffee sir?" She asked.
"That would be great," he replied. He moved the newpaper slightly, but I couldnt see his face still. His voice... sounded familiar. I couldn't place it. He was definitely American though... Britt poured him some coffee and came back over.
"That guy is cute," she whispered, putting the pot back.
"Whats he look like?" I whispered back.
"I dont know how to describe him... but hes just super hot..." I rolled my eyes and sat back.
The rest of the day dragged on slowly. Finally it was time to close shop. Britt had left early, so I was alone. I finished closing and walked out, locking the front door. I put my keys in my jacket pocket and began walking home. Thomas was still at work, so he couldn't pick me up. We normally got home around the same time luckily, so I wouldnt have to sit alone forever.
I stuck my hands in my pocket and continued down the cold dark street, alone. I turned the corner to my apartment, getting a strange feeling. I began walking faster, and tried to open the door to the building, but it was jammed again. I groaned and walked down the alley, to the back entrance. I stopped infront of it and dug in my pocket for my keys when a voice spoke out from behind me.
"Well, well, well, Caitlyn O'Brien... long time no see," he said. I turned around slowly and dropped my keys to the ground, seeing who was standing infront of me... thats why the man in the coffeeshop sounded familiar... It was Nick.
"I thought you-"
"Died? Yeah well, if you didnt notice my uncle was a compulsive liar... he was playing you."
"Typical... what are you doing here?"
"Scoping out the town, finding new enemies, gaining new allies, screwing up lives... the usual. I figured I would stop by, see how you and Tommy are doing... I hear he magically came back to life after you killed my uncle. How's normal life going for the two of you?"
"Leave me alone Nick," I picked up my keys and turned to unlock the door, but he grabbed my arm, flipped me around, and pressed me against the building.
"See, thats not going to happen... my uncle always let you off easily, but not anymore. This is your warning. If you don't want to die, and lose the only people you love, run. Run fast, but know that I'm going to find you. I will always find you. And when I do, I'll kill you. All of you."
"Why dont you just get it over with?"
"I guess you can say I'm like my uncle. I love the chase... have fun Caity cat," he let go of me and walked away, disappearing into the night. I was shaking where I stood, frozen in fear. I thought it was over...
I turned around and unlocked the door, running up the stairs as fast as I could. I ran to my flat and unlocked it, slamming the door behind myself.
"Hey," Thomas said standing up. "Whats wrong?" He asked. I didn't say anything. I just fell into his arms. He held me tightly. "Cait, what happened?" He asked softly.
"He's back..." I said with a quiver in my voice. "Nick is back and he's going to kill us...."
