Thomas sat next to me as I lay on the couch as Grant hooked up the ultrasound whatever. Thomas seemed a bit nervous. I reached over and grabbed his hand, smiling at him softly.
"Okay. I got it all set up. Are you ready?" Grant asked.
"Yeah. I'm ready," I smiled. I had no idea why, but I was so nervous. He smiled back at me and put his glasses on. I didn't even know he wore glasses...
"Okay. Can you lift your shirt?" I lifted it up and took a deep breath as he put the gel on the probe part. "His is going to be super cold, just so you know," he said before putting it on my stomach and rubbing it around. It really was cold. I looked at Thomas again and watched as he just stared at the screen. Grant moved the probe around slowly, staring at the screen. Suddenly there was a soft beating sound. "Hear that?" He asked.
"What is that?" I asked.
"It's the baby's heartbeat. It sounds pretty healthy, honestly. Okay, if you look here, this is the baby's head, heres an arm, legs," he went through, pointing at the screen. "If I had to guess, I'd say you're maybe four, four and a half months, but you don't seem to be showing much yet, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we should keep a closer eye on it. In many cases when the baby isn't developing as quickly, it has a larger possibly of going through a massive growth spurt towards the end of the pregnancy, possibly triggering an early labor."
"Is that bad? It sounds bad," Thomas said.
"It can be in some cases, but we'll just have to hope it doesn't come to that. He looked back at the screen. "If I'm right, the approximate due date should be.. around the second week of September." That just seems so soon.
"Wow," I said, still staring at the screen. That was our child... we made that. Thomas grabbed my hand and smiled.
"That's our.. that's our kid," he whispered.
"I might be able to tell the gender. If you want," Grant said. I looked up at Thomas.
"Do you want to know?" He asked me.
"I don't know, do you?"
"I mean. Kind of. It'd be nice to not have to worry about just one thing, like what gender our child is going to be." I nod my head in agreement.
"Then yes?"
"Yeah. Let's do it." I smiled and looked over at Grant.
"Okay," I said. He smiled and looked back at the screen. After a few minutes he looked back at us.
"Okay. I can definitely tell... you're sure you want to know?"
"Grant, just tell us," Thomas said.
"Okay, okay. You're having a boy. Congrats." He handed me a wet washrag to wipe my stomach off with after printing off some pictures from it. "I'll shut this down and give you guys a bit of privacy," he said. He turned it off and walked out of the room.
"A boy.." I said smiling.
"We're having a baby boy..." Thomas replied. I wiped the gell off of my stomach and pulled my shirt down. I turned to face him.
"It's so crazy. All that we're going through and then.. something can still make us smile." He pulled me into a hug.
"I don't know, personally I think it's crazier that we're going to be parents." I smiled again and pulled away.
"It is pretty crazy... I don't know how we're going to do it..
"Can you just imagine the conversations? 'Daddy, how do you and mummy meet?' 'Well son, this very evil man blackmailed us both to work for him as his spies doing terrible things and we just so happened to be neighbors and became a part if the same alliance to take him down. Then after I was forced to fake my death she went all crazy and murdered him.'," he said.
"Oh yes, and then theres always, "Mommy, why did you fall in love with daddy?' 'Oh son, I don't know. When I first met him he was a complete asshole, but then he saved my life from my evil fiance a couple dozen times,'." He just laughed and looked down.
"How are we supposed to raise him and give him the normal life that he deserves?" He asked, suddenly serious. I sighed and lay down on his chest.
"We do the best that we can to hide him from the bigger corruptions of the world. And... we could always..."
"What?" I looked up at him, staring into his deep brown eyes.
"We have to kill Nick. We have to."
"How?"
"I don't know. But the very next chance that we get, we have to take it. We can't allow him to rule our lives. Especially not now. We'll kill all of them if we have to." He just nodded in response.
"If our son is ever bullied, remind me that I should be the one to help him deal with it so someone doesn't die." I laughed again.
"I'm serious. These people are going to kill us if we don't kill them first. They'll kill him too." He sighed.
"I know. I know, you're right... I'll go in and talk to the others alright. But I want you to get some rest." I nod my head on response, feeling completely exhausted.
"Okay. But hurry back. I don't like being alone anymore." He kissed my forehead and stood up.
"I can ask Grant if he'll stay here with you."
"No it's fine. Bring him with you. I'll be fine for a little while. I just don't want to be away from you for too long." He smiled and kissed me softly before pulling away.
"I'll be back in 2 hours... tops," he promised.
"Alright. Bye."
"Bye. I love you 2 hours. I promise," he smiled. I smiled at him back.
"I love you too."
