"AAAHHHHH!!!!!"
"Baby! What's wrong?! Are you okay?!"
Justin hyperventilated as he sat up from the bed, trying to catch his breath. He pressed his hand to his chest as he tried to calm himself down. His breathing was shallow, slowly returning back to normal. Elaine shuffled herself through the dark and sat in front of him, trying to see what startled him. He placed her hands on his chin and looked at him, worried with what happened to him. Seeing that he was recovering, she pulled him closer and gave him a kiss. His breathing returned to normal as she smiled back at him.
"What happened, sweetheart?" she stroked his hair back.
"I had like the worst dream ever..." he looked at her, glad that he was back to reality.
"Do you remember what it was about?"
"Not really, no... I do remember you were in it though...It was just so scary..."
"Well..." Elaine said, slowly moving herself on top of him. "Since you're shaken up from your little nightmare, I think it's time for me to get your mind off of it..."
"I wouldn't mind that..." Justin smiled as he leaned in to kiss her, placing his hands on her hips. It was perfect that it was still too early in the morning for anything to ruin their moment.
"Daaaad! Mooom! Drew is bothering me again!"
"No I didn't! Mavis is blaming stuff on me again!"
They both groaned in laughter as they were just about to start. The arguing echoed down the hallway, faintly heard through the closed door.
"Kids, don't fight! Go back to sleep, you have school tomorrow!" Justin yelled from their room.
"Hey, come on... Don't let them fight now, get up." She slowly started getting off, lying down beside him.
"We can help them after a little bit of this..." he lied down next to her and stroked her hair back, going in for another kiss. "There's plenty of time before we wake up..."
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
"And that's your cue to go prepare breakfast!" Elaine smiled as she pushed him away. Just before Justin reached out to grab her, she crawled out and walked to their dresser, shutting off the alarm. She put on her grey sweats and her tight blue shirt and opened the door. She turned around and looked at him.
"Come on, I'll go get the kids, you go prepare breakfast and maybe you'll get a kiss." She smiled as she walked out.
"Haha, really funny..." He laughed.
As the door closed, he shuffled around and looked for his glasses, completely blind in the dark. His hands got to the desk beside the bed and felt the alarm clock, followed by his glasses. He got up and put on his favorite blue jeans he grabbed from the desk chair. He walked to the closet and grabbed his grey button up he ironed the night before. Looking into the mirror beside him, he noticed his white lab coat hung up, which after he got himself ready, took with him out the room. He walked down the hallway towards the staircase, where he heard Elaine settling things with Drew and Mavis. He walked down the spiral staircase into the living room, where he placed his lab coat onto the couch and walked into the kitchen.
Hearing crackling and sizzling coming from the kitchen, the kids ran down the stairs, their steps creaking the wooden floors as they entered the kitchen. As they gunned for the dining table, they hugged Justin, who was grabbing the rice from the rice cooker. They sat down, getting themselves associated onto the dining table, where stacks of omelets, logs of hot dogs, piles of pancakes and a hill of bacon awaited them.
"Mavis? Drew? Did you wash your hands yet?" He smiled as he set the rice down. Mavis and Drew slowly got up and walked towards the sink. Elaine walked down and passed by them, hugging Justin from behind. He gave him a kiss on the cheek, looking at the grand set of food prepared for them.
"Sweetie, you forgot something..." Elaine smiled as she walked towards the fridge.
"...What did I miss? Everything's all here..." Justin looked at the table, seeing nothing wrong with what he put in front of him. He didn't miss any of the food, and the plates, forks and spoons were set. She returned with a gallon of milk and orange juice and placed it on the table.
"Oh... thanks love" Justin laughed as he gave her a kiss.
"Mhm..." She walked around and sat in her seat as Mavis and Drew joined them. They started grabbing their spoons for the food.
"Kids! Remember what we do before we eat breakfast?" Elaine glared at them, slowly sitting back to their seats. She rose her hands as everyone around the table held each others hand. They said a quick prayer before digging into the mountain of food. As Justin grabbed for the food, he looked up at Elaine, who was eating up all the food she could possibly get into her stomach. She looked up and saw him smiling at her. She mouthed the words Thank you as she continued to chew down on her meal.
"Alright guys, you've got four minutes to get ready for school, or else we're not going out for dinner tonight!" Justin announced after they finished. Mavis and Drew leaned towards the stairs as they prepared for the countdown.
"Three... Two... One... GO!"
Mavis and Drew ran up the stairs as he heard them slam the doors closed. He and Elaine laughed as they cleaned up the table and placed them into the dishwasher. As they were washing the dishes for the rack, Justin's watch began to beep. He glanced at his watch, reading Time for Work!
"I got to go, sweetheart! I'll call you when I'm on a lunch break, okay?" He kissed her on the cheek as he wiped his hands on a towel hung on a handle.
"Okay, baby, I'll see you soon!" She turned to watch Justin grab his coat and walk out the front door. As he turned to close the door, he blew her a kiss and winked at her, making her blush and smile. She smiled and continued on with putting dishes into the dishwasher, hearing Mavis and Drew fight in the bathroom upstairs.
"Kids!" she yelled, hurrying to finish her chore. "Don't fight up there!"
Justin climbed into his Tesla and started the car. He backed out of the driveway and headed for his work. The road was clear, the sun shining brightly with no clouds in sight. He took a deep breath and smiled, the beauty of it all being relaxing.
As he drove down the sunny road, he got a phone call from his coworker. He touched the touchscreen pad on the middle console and answered it.
"Yo, Justin!"
"David! Hey! You already at work?"
"Haha, yeah! Couldn't miss the first day of testing, am I right?!"
"Testing...?"
"Oh shit..." He muttered quietly. "I wasn't supposed to tell you, was I?"
"David?" Justin said, chuckling. "What aren't you supposed to tell me?"
"Uhm..."
Justin started hearing the noise of crumpling paper in the phone call.
"Sorry... Signal... Bad... Losing... Connection..." David said as he crumpled the paper in the phone call.
"I'll see you at the lab, David." Justin laughed, ending the call as his car glided towards the highway.
