"What happened?" The trainer gasped.
"She hit a weak spot in the crap turf we're playing on, and her foot turned under her." Ashlyn explained, obviously ticked off.
"Well, as you can see, it's very badly bruised. I don't think it's broken, I'm thinking it's something wrong with a tendon. We'll have to get an MRI done to be sure, but we can't do that here. I'll run a few X-Rays with the equipment we have here, just to make sure. Can someone carry her in?"
"I will." Ash said, scooping her daughter up like a baby. "It'll be alright Champ. You'll be ok." She soothed as she carried her into the back. Once she was in, Ash had to leave, so the X-Rays could be done. She walked out to find Alex rubbing Ali's back while Ali sobbed quietly. Ash went on her other side.
"Hey Als? You ok?"
"Yeah, I just feel so bad."
"It's nobody's fault, Als. It's that goddamn turf. Alex, you can go back up to training if you want. If it's not a bone, we're gonna have to get her to the hospital. I'll come up and let you know, I know she'll want you to come. Just go let the team know what's going on."
"Yeah, of course." Alex said. "Let me know as soon as you do. "
"Will do Alex. Thank you."
"No problem guys. I hope she's ok."
"We do too."
Once Alex left, Ali broke down.
"It's not fair!" She sobbed into Ashlyn's chest. "Why her? She is too good to be set back!"
"I know Als, she is really good, but she's also a resilient 9 year old girl, who will come back stronger. I think we need to ask Carls to talk to her tonight. About perseverance and such."
"Yeah, you're right. We'll ask her later."
"Ash? Ali?" The trainer called out. "Come here."
"Coming." When they got in the exam room, they saw Sammie sitting up on the X-Ray table, looking sad. Ali went up and gave her a hug, and scooped her up and held her like a baby.
"I love you Sammie-Girl. You'll be ok. I promise."
"So girls." The trainers started. "It is not broken, so that could be good or bad. It is either a very bad sprain, or an issue with a tendon. We need to get her into the ER, so do you want to call an ambulance?"
"Yeah, we came on the bus so we don't have a car."
"Ok, I'll call now, why don't we get her up to field level, ok?"
"Ok." Ali said as she started to walk up to the field. "It's gonna be alright. I promise baby girl." She whispered to Sammie. She carried her out and she was instantly swarmed by Alex, Tobin, JJ, Pressy, Hope, Carli, and Jill.
"What's going on?" Alex asked
"Well, there is an an ambulance on the way, because she needs an MRI right away."
"Alex?" Sammie called. "Will you come with me?"
"Jill?" Alex asked.
"I think we're gonna call practice early, so it's fine Alex."
"Then of course I'll come with you, Sammie."
"Tobin, you too?"
"Yeah sure. Anything for you kid." Tobin said, just as the ambulance arrived. Once they loaded Sammie on, Ali, Ash, Tobin, and Alex loaded on. The rest of the team loaded onto the bus to head back to the hotel.AT THE HOSPITAL
Ali and Ash left to talk to the doctor, and that left Sammie with Alex and Tobin, waiting to go in for the MRI.
"Guys" Sammie asked.
"Yeah girly?" Alex answered
"Am I gonna be ok?"
"Of course you are Sammers."
"I like that. You should call me that, like my nickname."
"Will do, Sammers. And of course you're gonna be Ok. Everyone gets injured from time to time. It's part of the game."
"Yeah, and Sam," Tobin started. "It's not about if you get hurt, it's about when, but even more important, it's not about if you come back, it's about how much stronger you do."
Thanks guys. I'm really nervous. What are they gonna do?"
"Well, it's called an MRI." Alex explained. "they are gonna lay you on a table, and back you into this tube, and you just have to stay very still until they're done. It's like an X-Ray but to see tendons and muscles and stuff like that. It should take around a half hour if you stay still. It won't hurt at all, and we'll all be here after. Me, Tobs, and your parents."
The doctor came in, followed by Ali and Ash, with a wheelchair.
"You ready Champ?" Ash asked
"As I'll ever be."
"Alright, let's get you in there Samantha" The doctor said. "Can someone get her in the chair?"
"I will." Alex said lifting Sammie up and into the chair. "I love you, Sammers. You'll be fine" she encouraged, kissing her on the forehead.
"See you in a little bit, Sam." Tobin said, hugging her. "I'll pray for you" she whispered.
"I love you Champ! You'll be fine, I promise." Ash encourages, hugging her.
"I love you sammie-girl. I really really do." Ali said, kissing her daughter. "See you in a few minutes."
"Bye guys. See you soon, love you all." Sammie said as the doctor wheeled her out.
