We drove in silence for a while. At first a few minutes passed, and then minutes turned into hours and still nothing. Until finally Mason asked me why I grabbed the necklace I was wearing. I told him the whole story about my mom and how I wanted a piece of her since I couldn't say goodbye. At the exact moment I finished my story he pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car.
I freaked out and asked him what was going on because honestly I was terrified that he was just gonna leave me out here alone. But instead of dumping me out on the side of this random road in god knows, he turned to me and said "Kat, you know I love you and I think you do too but if you don't want to come with me I understand. And I can take you back right now, and we can act like this entire day never happened. I understand that you probably don't want to trust me, but at the same time I understand that you still do. So you decide, come with me and I promise I will always protect you or I will turn round right now and take you home."
What the fuck was I supposed to say?!?!?!?!? I mean he loved me and he promised to protect me, and he never broke a promise, something felt wrong. He just kind of stared at me waiting for an answer, but I really didn't have one. This was another one of those deciding moments that I mentioned earlier. At the time I thought I was making the right decision, but now I know for a fact I didn't.
I turned to him grabbed his hand, and said " Mason I love you....... but I can't do this. Please take me home."
He kissed me and without another word he brought me back home. As I walked back into my house to unpack my bag and put the necklace back Mason called my name. I slowly walked back to the car, unsure of what he was gonna say. He said "Kat I get why you don't want to come with me but I know you are not safe here. You probably don't have more than a week until they find you and I won't be here to protect you. So take this and never take it off, and if you ever need to find me it will show you the way." And with that he drove off as I stood there stunned and staring at this small black box just placed in my hands.
I opened the box to find a silver chain with a pendant on it. I kind of reminded me of my mother's necklace but the pendant was different. This one had a silver circle with a red cross through the middle. I thought Mason was being absolutely ridiculous, but it was the only memory I had of him so I put it on as I headed home again.
It was almost seven and my parents would be coming home soon so I almost ran to unpack my bag, put the necklace back, and get rid of the note. By 7:15 I was casually sitting on the couch with a snack and watching T.V as if this whole day never happened. When my parents came home we ordered pizza and ate together while they talked about their day at work. They are both doctors so they are almost never home and they always tell the goriest stories during dinner which is always fun. After that we all were super tired so we packed up and headed to our rooms. That night while my parents slept, I laid in bed clutching my new necklace and thinking about the huge mistake I made.
