At first I didn't know what to do. Because honestly there was no way in hell I ever would have expected that kind of a reaction. But the moment I stopped internally freaking out I realized how amazing this moment was. (And in case it wasn't obvious enough, that was my first kiss. But it was also his.) I had never thought we could be this close, and I knew we were only going to get closer after this. When we finally broke away from each other we both kind of just stood there unsure of what to do. Mason gave me this smug little smile, which made me really happy but at the same time extremely confused. I still didn't know if there was some kind of problem, but I knew something was up.
Before he could even try and say something I asked him what was going on again. Something amazing had just happened and I knew that, but I wasn't going to let him avoid whatever he was dealing with. I always promised I would be there for him, and I intended to keep that promise. I asked him again and he finally started talking. He said, "I can't stay here any longer. I lost everyone and it's only a matter of time till they find me. I am completely in love with you, and I know that they will come after you first so we need to leave. Now."
What the FUCK?!?!?!? What was I supposed to say. Honestly at first I thought he was on something, because this just was not the Mason I knew. He was always calm, cool, and collected. Mason would never come up with some kind of half-ass story to try and freak me out. I knew him better than that, which means that something big really was going on. So I said "Mason don't say something like that and expect me not to freak out. What are you talking about? Clearly there is something going on and I just want to help, so tell me the truth."
Mason looked so confused. He replied with"I am telling you the truth now we have to go. We will swing by your house and then you have like fifteen minutes to pack a bag. After that we are out of here." He grabbed my hand starting to gently guide me out of the stairwell, but I just froze in place. I think that may have been one of the most defining moments in my life. Should I trust him and follow him blindly, or trust everything I have ever known and not leave. My time to decide was up, and I chose.
I squeezed his hand and we ran out of that stairwell together, and I never looked back.
