Kevin's POV
The drive over to Edd's feels longer than usual, and for some reason I can't shake the butterflies in my stomach. I don't know why I am so nervous to meet Edd's parents, he has prepared me for the last week on everything I should know before having dinner with them.
Pulling into his driveway I am greeted by Edd, waiting for me outside.
"Hello." Is all I can slip out of my mouth.
"Salutations Kevin, I hope you have brought your appetite." Edd says in a welcoming voice, yet his eyes reflect his inner nervousness.
"I did, I can't wait to finally meet your parents."
The inside of Edd's house looks relatively the same, except for the addition of a few fall decor and the scents of Turkey surrounding me. After just moments I am bombarded by both of his parents, who are somewhat different than what I expected.
"Welcome, Kevin." A man, who I assume is Edd's father says to me as he extends his clammy hand to me.
"Edd informed us that you have an omnivorous diet, I hope Turkey will suffice." Edd's mother says to me in a somewhat off putting voice.
"That sounds wonderful."
"Great let's eat." She says, gesturing to the dining room.
Edd's POV
"How did you boys meet?" My father asks a bit too forcefully.
"Father, I thought I had mentioned it before. Kevin and I have known each other since childhood." I respond coolly. Scanning the table I see that my mother is analyzing Kevin's every move and word carefully.
"What colleges have you been accepted to Kevin?" My mom presses, hoping to illicit a response she can use to her advantage.
"I haven't applied to any yet, but with the help of Edd's tutoring I think I have a chance of getting into a decent one."
"I am assuming that Edd has told you he has accepted a full scholarship to Columbia.
"He has informed me, I plan on choosing my college accordingly." Kevin says, clearly speaking with a lot of forethought. Zoning out I avoid eye contact with my parents as their eyes are full of distaste for Kevin, and I cannot handle their condescending attitudes. For both being intelligent, well respected professors their lack of compassion towards Kevin shocks me. Just because academics aren't his strong suit, doesn't give them the right to be judgmental.
"Will you give it a rest." I finally say, the words shooting out of my mouth like a machine gun.
"Eddward, please calm down. We do not want to upset our guest." My mother's words are pointed, clearly she is happy with the chaos she caused within me.
"Both of you have been nothing but rude towards Kevin. Whether you support my decision or not, I love him."
"How have we been rude." Both of my parents say practically in unison.
"Treating my boyfriend like one of your psychology experiments mother is not appropriate. He is a human being, not a rat in Skinner's box." I say somewhat leveling with my mom. She has always respected my opinions, especially when I make reference to academics.
"My apologies Kevin. Would you care for some Pie?" Mother says, her apology although muted is noted. Looking over at Kevin, his faced is layered with confusion. Clearly my families dynamic is out of the norm and I didn't prepare enough for this day.
