I stood there with a million thoughts rushing to my head all at once. He likes me. Troye Anderson likes me.
"Say something Mavis." Troye said with a pleading look in his eyes. He looked so perfect. He always did.
Just as I was about to tell him that I liked him an awful lot too, Jennifer walked in on us. For a moment she stood with hatred filled in her eyes. She wiped the hateful expression off her face and walked closer to us. It didn't look like she was leaving anytime soon. Troye dropped his hands back to his sides. Way to ruin the moment Jennifer. Troye let out a sigh and walked out of the balcony, leaving me with her.
Gee, thanks Troye.
I gave her a smile, and started to leave, not bothering to ask her what she wanted, before she stopped me.
"Mavis." She stated in an overly sweet voice. "So, you and Troye huh?"
"What about us?" I asked.
"You guys are a couple?" Her smile was sickening.
"No." I replied curtly.
Her demeanor changed right that moment. The smile was wiped off her face and she glared at me. "Troye is mine, Mavis. You better stay away. Just know that I can make your life a living hell."
So.. Mature?
"You should listen to yourself right now. You'd cringe if you did." With that, I walked away, not giving her a chance to say anything else.
***The next morning, Troye was waiting for me as usual. I got in to his car and smiled at him. He didn't bother look at me, or even saying hi.
What did I do?
Once we reached school, we got out of the car, and he started walking away without a word.
"Troye!" I ran behind him. "What's wrong?"
He didn't answer. He kept walking at a very fast pace, not looking at me. We were in the hallway when something came over me. I took a firm hold of his arm, causing him to stop. He looked alarmed.
"I'm talking to you." I said. "What's wrong Troye?"
He slowly shook his head and released his arm from my grip. "Nothing, Mavis. I'll see you later." With that, he disappeared into the crowd of students.
At lunch I sat at our usual table. Allison and Jacob were kissing away in glory with Lucy and Taylor making disgusted faces. Troye hadn't shown up. I didn't make an effort to talk to anyone. I thought about what Troye had told me the night before. I fought the urge to giggle and dance like an idiot. I'd done enough of that before going to bed last night. Was he mad because I didn't say anything? He was expecting a reply. I was an idiot to stand and gape at him. But hey, it was Jennifer's fault too. God, I don't like her.
"Where's Troye?" I suddenly blurted.
Nobody knew what happened between Troye and I last night. The girls would flip out if I told them.
"Library." Jacob replied. "He said he had to write a paper for English."
I glanced at my watch. Lunch was almost over. I could go talk to Troye now. I gathered my things and got up. "I have to go meet Mrs. Noah." I lied. "I'll see you guys later. Bye."
