CHAPTER FORTY FOUR

If I was describe my mood when I turned up in Mackenzie's bedroom it would be nothing more than disappointed. She wasn't sat crying in terror at the news of Caleb's hospitalisation and that only made the situation worse for me. I was relying on Mackenzie's fear renewing my faith but I had no such luck.

Before I could let me disappointment turn to anger, I heard the loud familiar click of Mack's front door shutting. The hair on the back of my neck stood up in anticipation as I waited to see if the evil bitch would come through her bedroom door and make my day.

"Dad?" her whiny voice called out, the sound reverberating through me as it echoed throughout the empty house.

A small smile rose to my face as I went and stood behind her bedroom door so that I had the element of surprise. I guess all this hiding wasn't really neccessary as I wasn't actually supposed to be here on account of being deceased so I was always going to be a surprise to my victims. But the hiding was more satisfying that just there faces when they walked through the door and spotted me.

Mackenzie slowly opened the door and looked around for a while before entering. Her paranoia that I was always lurking had been heightened and I couldn't help the small smile it brought to my face. She closed the door and stood in the middle of her room, reaching her neck out so that she could see into her private bathroom.

I took this moment to walk up behind her and unable to stop myself I found my hands reaching out as I pushed her forward with all the strength I could muster.

Mackenzie flew forward like a newborn giraffe on account of her heels. She stumbled for several steps before landing straight on her backside on the carpeted floor. Her face contorted in pain as her tailbone made contact with the ground and it was obvious that not even the fluffy carpet beneath her bony ass could protect it from bruising.

"Miss me?" I said, a malicious grin making it's way onto my face.

Mackenzie started to tumble back as she desperately tried to put distance between the two of us. She tried to get back onto her feet but was unsuccesfful on account of the stilleto heels.

"Why won't you leave me alone?" she said, her voice rising like a dramatic plea and I found myself wincing at the pitch.

"Histronic psychopaths don't get to call the shots, I call the shots. We've been over this. I know you're not stupid, Mack, I mean you managed to create a whole revenge plot, get someone else to murder me and also get your step-mother put in an asylum. We both know that takes a lot of brains so why don't you level with me," I replied with a small chuckle at the end.

Mackenzie stared at me with eyes full of terror before they narrowed and she wiped a lone tear from under her eye. In seconds she had morphed from damsel in distress to vicious vixen and it was almost unsettling to realise that her fear was all an act.

"I wondered how long it would take you to realise I wasn't scared. Of course I told Tyler I was scared and he was quick to comfort me. I really like the way he does that thing when he pulls away, you know where he gently bites your bottom lip?" she said as she took a seat on the edge of her bed while wiping a piece of lint off of her short pinstripe skirt. Mack looked up at me with a smirk and tilted her head to the side, "it must really suck to know he hates you."

I was taken aback for a few seconds at this new side to Mackenzie Rivers. I had thought Mack was all out of surprises but apparently she had a few more up her sleeve.
