CHAPTER TWENTY
Six days before my death, Mackenzie tried to contact me and for the first time in a while, she succeeded.
I had been out of the house a lot more since the incident. It was worrying to be in the house. I didn't feel safe there anymore and I certainly didn't feel comfortable either. My mum and dad had been withdrawn, the shame they felt at my actions was evident. They weren't just disappointed, they were ashamed
Do you know what it feels like to have your parents — the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally — feel ashamed of you?
I would never wish that upon anyone, that's how painful it was.
A supposed cold hearted bitch like me couldn't even handle the feeling.
I tended to go to Tyler's or just go for walks. I should have been afraid to go out walking alone, but I wasn't. I felt safer in public while I was alone than I did in my own room.
Sometimes, I'd spot them lurking around. Always watching me. I sort of became accustomed to it so that it wasn't as terrifying as it was previously.
Believe it or not, I actually felt relieved when I could see them.
It was when I couldn't see them that I felt worried.
I ran into Mackenzie one day while I was walking around the park. It wasn't exactly a pleasant encounter.
"Khloe, how are you? I've been trying to call you-" she started as soon as she came into my line of vision. I was too exhausted to fight her. I was both physically and mentally drained from the sleep deprivation.
"I know," I replied almost completely blank from emotion.
"I figured you wouldn't reply but then I heard about what happened," she said. Her face portrayed concern but her eyes — they showed something else. Glee.
"Why would that change anything?" I asked my tone icy.
"I just assumed that you would want your friends around you with-" she began before I stopped her.
"Just because some freak decided to break into my house doesn't mean we're friends. I'm not your friend and I never will be," I replied coolly.
"How can you say that after everything we've been through together?" she replied, anger starting to seep into her voice.
"Because I realised how twisted you really are. You never cared about me — never. Even now, you thought you could use my fear to worm your way back into my life. I saw it in your eyes Mackenzie. Oh, and you're also the reason that Caleb and I are no longer together. Considering you slept with him. Did you forget about that minor detail that involved you cheating with my boyfriend?" I stated as I folded my arms under my chest.
"That's not true! I-" she started to refute me before I silenced her by raising my hand.
"I don't want to hear it Mackenzie," I said as I spun on my heels to leave. She waited several seconds which allowed me to get a few metres away from her before she replied.
"It wasn't just a burglary gone wrong though, was it Khloe?" her voice was venomous. She was super pissed.
I halted in my tracks and spun around to look at her. Her posture was straight and her eyes gleamed with something I couldn't quite place my finger on. She acted as though she knew something I didn't and it angered me.
