Age 12 (fifth grade)
Piper sat in the middle of her History class, bored out of her mind. Mr. Greene had a monotonous voice that made her wanna beat her head in and her ADHD was killing her and she needed something to occupy her, so she looked over to Percy who was sitting directly in front of her. Butterflies instantly fluttered around in her stomach because she's been crushing on him for a while now and he was totally oblivious to it. Piper let out a sigh, slightly annoyed that Percy hasn't figured it out yet.
Then there was Percy, who sat at his desk doodling. He never took notes because his dyslexia just wouldn't allow it and the harder he tries, the more stubborn it gets. With his blue pen, Percy was drawing a picture of a plate of his mother's famous blue waffles. His mouth watered just thinking about it.
Piper waited until Mr. Greene turned back to the board and leaned up to Percy and whispered next to his ear. "Hey Percy. Why are you drawing a plate of waffles?"
Percy quickly covered up his journal, suddenly embarrased by what Piper had just seen. "Oh. Uh, I, um was just ah-" Percy was interupted by Mr. Greene when he spun back around facing Percy and I. "Am I interrupting anything Mr. Jackson, Miss McLean?"
Percy and Piper replied with a simultanious "No, sir." and the bell rang ending the class. The duo shot out of their seats and scurried out of the class. The both of them sighed with relief because this was the last class of the school year and now, they were finally free from this cage.
Later, they waited outside at carpool for Sally to pick them up in the SUV. While the two sat on the bench together when the most popular boy in the grade, James Sullivan, and his posse walked passed them. "Hey, Piper. Hey Penson-"
"It's Percy." Percy retorted.
"Uh huh. Just sayin' hi. Bye Piper."
Piper was bored with his appearance, but she smiled. "Hi, James." and with a smile, the boy and his friends walked away.
Percy sat there with his arms crossed. "He doesn't really want to talk to me. He just wants you because he think's you're pretty."
Piper raised an eyebrow. "What. Are you saying that I'm not pretty?" She asked to see what answer she would get from him.
Percy's cheeks tainted and glued his eyes to the pavement. "Uhh.. Well, you see, you're... not ugly.."
Despite the anger from him kind of insulting her, she teased him some more. "Awwe! Is little Penson jealous of me talking to other guys?" she teased. Then, their ride pulled up. "Come on, Penson. Our ride is here."
Percy slung his bag over his shoulder. "I am not jealous and my name is not Penson, so just stop calling me that, okay?"
Piper giggled as they hopped in the car, greeted by Sally. "Hey kids! Enjoy the last day of school?" There was no answer, but she already knew the answer. Nope!
"Okay. Well, Percy, since Piper's dad is taking her to India, I thought you and I could do something together." Sally suggested.
Percy instantly smiled. "Where to?"
Sally was happy to see her soon so excited. She took a hand off the wheel and put it to her lips. "It's a surprise. You'll just have to wait and see."
