Chapter 11: Burgeon Isle? Never heard of it
I got dragged all the way to the entrance of the school by an angry Angie with Buster barking behind me, and stopped when we reached a black carriage which seemed to be drawn by a pair night-mares. Night-mares are like horses; just imagine a black horse with glowing eyes, a flaming mane and flaming hooves. The carriage’s drive seemed to be a ghost just like me, and about my age too, but he look more like those transculent American ghosts, but he seem pretty solid. He had blonde hair and wore a butler suit. He seemed to have some sort of glint in his eye, a usual glint I get from arsonists I see on TV.
He got down from the carriage and opened the door for Angie, “Afternoon, Madam Angie,” said the blonde ghost.
“Don’t call me that,” said Angie.
“Of course Madam Angie, I will stop calling you madam, Madam,” said the ghost with a smile.
“Don’t troll me Lawrence” said Angie, as she stared daggers at him.
“Come on Xiang, get in the carriage,” she told me.
“Err, is it saf…” I stared, but I was cut off by Angie dragging me into the carriage. Buster yapped and hopped on.
There is another girl on board the carriage, she looks exactly like Angie, except she has long hair and wore a black dress, and she seem less violet than Angie, I hope. The girl waved at me when I entered the carriage, and I returned the wave. “New guy?” she asked Angie. Angie just nodded her head.
“Aw cool! Hey Lawrence! Alvanda got someone to take you place!” yelled the girl.
“Great! Hey new guy! Don’t mess up the Team’s rep! Okay?” replied Lawrence.
“Em... Yeah! I’ll try!” I yelled back.
“Hi, I’m Lucy, Angie’s cheerful and mild-mannered twin sister, nice to meet you,” said the girl.
“Nice to meet you too, I’m Xiang,” As I said that, Buster growled. “Oh yeah, this is Buster, my dead pet,” I said. Lucy smiled and scratched him behind his left ear.
“Hold on to your undies people! The von Berringwood carriage is about to leave!” yelled Lawrence.
“How long is this gonna take?” I asked. I almost yelled when Angie said “About five to six days…”
She stopped for a while to look at my flames, which were starting to turn white again.
“Calm down” she said, “Its five to six days for a normal carriage, and fifteen minutes for a carriage pulled my night-mares,” I took a breath of relief and my flames turned back to light blue.
“So… are you a Gifted Human dead guy, or just a dead guy?” asked Lucy.
“What?” I asked, I have no idea what a Gifted Human was, the Guide to All Things Magical-ish might have something about it, so I took it from my magic belt and started going through the contents.
Both Angie and Lucy’s eyes widened when they saw me pulling out the book. They seem more interested in my belt than the ridiculously large book I’m holding.
“How did you do that?” asked Lucy, amazed.
“I just thought about it and I did it… I can’t really explain…” I said.
“Mind if I borrowed it?” asked Lucy “Angie got the family cloak and I got the Scythe of Despair,”
I quickly said “No and a Scythe of Despair?”
“Yes, the Scythe of Despair, it’s a family heirloom, Angie gave it to me cause she said it was too clunky,” explained Lucy. “And why won’t you lend me the belt? I don’t have the ability to Shadow cloak,”
“This belt is also my pants! I can’t let you wear my pants! After all, I can’t wear boxers anymore…” Lucy’s face flushed red and kept quiet for a while. I continued to flip through the guide and reached the magically born people section. It said something about humans having supernatural powers, like combustion, super strength, things like that. I don’t have superpowers when I lived so I guess I’m just a normal yurei.
“I’m a normal yurei,” I told the girls.
“Aw… I hoped you have superpowers like Lawrence, he can shoot white fire,” said Angie.
“Well, I can do what a ghost can do, and I have a sword,” I said.
“Yeah, but that skill won’t help us much until you learn how to use it, after all Burgeon Isle can be a wild place,” said Angie.
“Burgeon Isle?” I asked. “I’ve never heard of that place…”
“We are somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, protected by a magic barrier that causes boats to go around us and think that they are going forward” explained Angie.
“Illusion Magic… smart,” I said.
“The island was found by Sir Fiddlesticks Burgeon…” started Angie,
“His name was Finklestine Burgeon,” corrected Lucy.
“Whatever, anyway, he wanted to slay a sea dragon to bring back its tusks as a prize, but he wounded up here, and soon humans knew about this place and began colonizing this place, and the natives, the Folk, made friends with the humans and where taught how to behave like civilized folk, no pun intended. It was the Golden Age of Burgeon Isle, soon after other supernatural folk moved to Burgeon Isle, which explains why I’m here. There are a large number of beings that relate to Asian legends due to us being closer to Asia, but there are also a large number of beings that have relations to Western legends too, so it’s balanced,” explained Angie.
“I see that you pay attention in class more now,” said Lucy.
“Well… I had to pay attention because there was a war mentioned,” said Angie.
“A war?” I asked
“Yes a war, we call it the Great Rebellion, it happened after Burgeon’s death, when his son, Burgeon the Second wanted to use the Folk as slaves, war broke out, the non-natives took sides, the side led by the humans are called the Empire, and the Folk side were called the Rebels,” said Angie.
“That is Star Wars you ding-dong!” said Lucy. “The demon side was called the Legion and the human side was called the Slayers,” corrected Lucy.
“In the end nobody won, both the Folk and the humans were forced to take up arms against the Dark Lord Cascus, whose ambition is to rule the world, the war between Cascus’s forces and the Burgeon Isle Defense, the alliance between the Legion and Slayers, blew Burgeon Isle into pieces, the name didn’t change to Burgeon Isles because Burgeon die before he said so,” continued Lucy.
“Besides that, they didn’t bother to name the animals in this place, so the unofficial name for them is Burgeon’s and then insert some animal’s name. I’ve heard that they were giving out wads of cash for anyone who can name an animal, so far, the only animal named is the Burgeon’s Boar, which is now called the Spine-boar” said Angie.
“Let me guess, you named it?” I asked
“No” said Angie as she stared at her shoes, “Fox named it,”
Lucy raised her eyebrow and said “Go figure, that Fox's creative I'll say.”
Then, we heard Lawrence knocking on the carriage door and saying, “We’re here,” as he opened the door. We moved out to see a huge medieval castle, it looked like a normal castle, but there was a shed beside it, it had a sign saying "Beware, Hellhound"
“Welcome to Castle von Berringwood,” said Lawrence.
