Chapter 14: I almost broke rule #1
Going through a portal isn’t like being shadow cloaked, it feels like you are on a merry-go-round, and everything is spinning. When you land on the ground it hurts because you land face first if you’re not lucky. I landed on my head, and broke Angie’s fall, she landed on my stomach, which wasn’t very helpful.
She got up and said, “That’s why I shadow cloak,” as she brushed the dust off herself. I groaned “That hurt!” and as I tried to get up Buster fell on top of me, making me fall again.
Angie laughed “Man! You need to get used to being a yurei, ‘cause if you get adjusted you won’t fall down that much,”
I pushed Buster off me and tried to get up, I found it hard getting up without legs, and had to have Angie pull me up. Mr. Burkes appeared and said “All right! You can wander as far as you like, the worksheet will just pull you back when times up!”
I looked at the worksheet, it said “Name the kind of plant adaptation that you can observe and give the plants their scientific names,”
I drifted off to an acacia tree and ‘sat’ there while observing the plants and wildlife, Buster settled down beside me with his head resting on his front legs. Angie leaned against the tree, occasionally looking up when she hears bird noises.
Everything seemed peaceful, it felt like, it felt like I was actually living again. But everything shattered when a hyena popped out of a bush and attacked me. The hyena was as big as a lion, its teeth was razor sharp. It lunged at me, but was whacked off by my sword. I thanked God for giving me reflexes and tried to cut the hyena. Buster drew its attention away from me by biting its ear, and 'ran' circles around it.
I turned around to call out to Angie, but she was gone, I guess she when to get help. Before I turned around, I was pounced on by the hyena, I then thought that it would be good if I didn’t get bit, and the world turned dark. I looked around, and saw that I was underground, there were moles with what looked like bat wings tunneling about. I popped back into the surface, and appeared behind the hyena, it was digging the ground; trying to get a hold of me.
Then, it stopped, it turned around and snarled. It was clear on its face that it was annoyed. Right before it lunged at me; Buster rammed into it and disappeared inside its body. At that moment, the hyena tilted its head sideways. “Buster? You there?” I asked. The hyena replied with a bark, it sounded almost human. It looked confused, and at that moment I knew it was Buster. Buster usually tilts his head and flattens his ears when he’s confused and that’s what the hyena did.
“Xiang! Are you alright?” said a voice, it was Angie, and she brought Mr. Burkes, Joel and Fox with her. Mr. Burkes pressed his lips against his panpipes and started playing. Its music didn’t sound like normal panpipes, it sounded like the wind whistling and the water flowing, it was beautiful, like nature itself is singing. As soon as Mr. Burkes blew his panpipes, the ground under Buster/Hyena, shook and he was pinned down by tree roots.
Buster came out of the hyena, looking startled. Joel walked forward and said “Wow, a Burgeon’s Hyena, nice!”
“What Burgeon’s Hyena? It’s a Mauler Hyena, Ooh that’s a name! Now where’s my money? I want my money!” said Fox.
Mr. Burkes said “My, my,” and knelt down beside the hyena. He whispered something in hyena’s ear and it stopped struggling, and the roots stopped binding it. Fox jumped down from his place on Joel’s javelin and transformed in to a normal fox, but instead of orange fur, he had brownish-yellow fur. He walked up to the hyena and let out a few yaps and barks. The hyena laughed, and barked a reply to Fox, Fox chuckled and yapped again, and the two started what seemed to be a conversation. After fifteen minutes, Fox told us, “Hatin here is an outcast of his tribe; he was desperate and hungry, so he attacked Xiang. He apologies for the trouble he has caused, he said that if we find a home for him he would feel better,”
“Hmm,” said Mr. Burkes, “That’s a great idea!” At that moment, his ears perked up, “Oops, times up!” and snapped his fingers, all the students from class 6B tumbled out of green portals. He then asked, “We found an out casted hyena here! Who would be responsible enough to take care of him?”
No one made a sound until, a girl said “Oh, I would!” She had brown skin, brown hair, light brown eyes, wore a light blue shirt, a blue baseball cap and a pair of trainers and carried something really out of place with her clothes, she carried a staff with a skull and feathers on, it reminded me of a voodoo priest’s staff. She came up and gave the hyena a pat on the head. Fox came up to her and said “Okay, so since you want to keep him would you like to know how to talk to him…” and went off talking about a scroll of animal communication, and either if the girl wanted the hyena as a combat or house pet.
“Okay, meet me at the basement of the school during recess, you will get your scroll and you license of ownership,” said Fox as he brought the girl back. “Well, let’s get back! I don’t want you to be late for class later!” said Mr. Burkes.
We popped back in class by landing our heads; we landed in random places, someone got his head stuck in a desk and had to have his friends pull him out. I saw Angie trying her best not to laugh.
At that time the bell rang, and this time it sounded like a girl screaming for her life, that made me jump, “What was that?!” I yelled. Angie looked at me and rolled her eyes, “Ugh, calm down scaredy-cat, that was the bell. Next class is Music, let’s go!”
