A REALLY SMALL problem

Chapter 18: A really small problem

We were escorted to the tunnel by the village guard, a big, blurry, and yet intelligent orc, no, goblin. According the guard, goblins come in different sizes, they sometimes get big like him, they are considered orcs by the humans and the stories spread, but they were actually goblins and soon the name stuck and orcs became a goblin sub-species.

We stopped in front of the mouth of the tunnel, it’s as big as a bus, and looks like one tunneled through it too, besides that there were small craters and the plantation nearby were charred. Wendy knelt down beside the tunnel and felt the rock, she looked at Kai, and Kai said “Goblin firearms, guess the missing caravan put up a fight here,that meant the got out, but were caught again."

Fox sniffed the ground and said, “Hmm, Team Gemini was here, and strangely the scents smell recent , there’s the scent of magic everywhere, along with the faint scent of ozone, besides that, I also smell acid, Kai's right they broke out but got recaptured. The scent continues down the tunnel, come one follow me!” 

The guard said, “Be careful, this tunnel is connected to other natural tunnels,” and he gave us a map each, and said “Don’t get lost,”

Kai gave him a nod, turned to us and said, “Everyone you heard the guard, don’t get lost, we better stick together, Wendy, Fox and Joel, you three go in first, Angie, Xiang second, Julia and I will be the last, we’ll keep an eye on our backs.”

We entered the tunnel, and it was not very well lit, the only light sources were either some undamaged and badly made lights, or Fox’s tail, his tail’s tip was lit up by a small spark, like a Charmander.

We followed the lights and the deeper we went the worst the bad feeling in my gut is. Everyone is on high alert; we all supposed the things in here probably got the jump on Team Gemini.

I heard dripping and scattering sounds as we walked through the tunnel. I almost bumped into Angie when she suddenly stopped; I asked “What’s going on?”

“Shush, Fox picked up movement,” she whispered. Fox was sniffing the air and ground, he looked at Kai and said “Dude! You will not believe what I found! Some idiot left this uneaten lollipop here!”

I heard a slapping sound, and I assume it’s someone face-palming themselves from Fox’s ‘stupidity’, if you ask me I think the fox was just trying to lighten the mood, being in dark places is tense! “Hey! It’s cherry!” exclaimed Fox as he unwrapped and popped the candy in his mouth.

Kai sighed and said “Fox, if you’re going to goof around then we won’t get anywhere! Team Gemini’s counting on us!”

“Somehow, that’s not reassuring,” said Julia. “Well what can ya expect? We’re not the best, but at least we… wait, do you guys hear that” said Fox as his ears perked up, “I hear…chattering, like bats but…”

“Well? Spit it out!” said Angie. “It’s coming from over there…” said Fox as he pointed at the wall. “How can chattering come from the walls? We’re underground, we’re surrounded by rocks and dirt!” said Kai. I drifted closer towards the wall Fox was pointing at, and I heard it. It was soft chattering, like bats, but with a slower pitch. I turned to Kai and said “He’s right, I hear it too,” Angie raised a hand near her ear and said “He’s telling the truth, I hear it to!”

Kai knocked on the wall where the sound came from and said “It’s not rock, its wood! Wendy crack this thing open!” Upon hearing this Wendy plucked off a mine from her belt and -“Wait don’t bomb it! We need to be silent!” said Julie.

Wendy sighed and flicked her finger at the wall, causing it to disintegrate at the touch of the finger and the tunnel shook slightly bringing it down dust. I just stared at Wendy with my mouth agape, and tried asking Angie what just happened but all I did was squeaking sounds.
