We stood in the kitchen as Mimi taught me how to cut onions. I'd met all of the other slaves that work here too. Though, they all seem different. Indeed we are all the same and we're all black but none of them seem to be my colour. All of them are lighter than me. This really worried me because my mother would teach me about how slavery worked and how the darker slaves would work outside but the lighter ones would be given jobs inside. That means, ideally, I'm supposed to be outside working on the plantation. "Mimi?"
"Yes honey?" she smiled.
"I'm not supposed to be here am I?" "Well of course not nobody's supposed to be a slave but-"
"No, I mean, I'm supposed to be working outside isn't it? I'm darker." Mimi had a sympathetic expression on her face looking at me as if I was an abandoned puppy.
"Well, yes, but all of us agree that you are too young and small and you'll be treated badly if you work out there. Honey, your shade doesn't matter."
"It does." I mutter quietly but she doesn't hear me.
"We're going to talk to master at dinner today, we gonna try our hardest to make sure you stay here inside we'll persuade him. Don't worry."
I give a weak smile. I know it won't work. I'm dark. Of course I'll have to work out on the plantation.Dinner time soon comes around and the master, his wife their two sons and daughter sit at the table. This includes the boy I encountered earlier.
"Here, Indika go pour the tea for the family."
Mimi says handing me a jug. I nervously walk towards the table and start to pour tea starting with the master of course.
"Mimi?" His loud voice shouts. Without a second passing Mimi stands next to the master.
"Why is she here?" He asks pointing at me.
"About that sir, we all believe that she is young and fragile if she works out on the plantation she will get hurt and may even die sir-"
"And I care because?" Master said sarcastically. I suddenly got a shot of pain in my chest.
"Sir we'd just really appreciate it if she could stay in here. She's young and lost." Mimi begged.
"What's your name?" Master asked looking directly at me. "Indika sir." I said refusing to look at him.
"How old are you Indika?"
"Seventeen sir" I whispered. I hear a loud bang on the table as Master slams his hands down.
"Seventeen? Mimi she's seventeen? Heck I'd even consider you too old. Stop making excuses for her she's working, eating and sleeping outside no arguing or you will join her. I won't have no blick nigger working in my house. You understand?"
"Yes sir" Mimi says bowing her head and walking back into the kitchen. My eyes start to become glossy as his hurtful words ran through my mind. "Don't call her that" I hear a distinctive voice say. I look to see the boy from earlier on looking at his father with a hint of anger. "I beg your pardon?" His father questions him.
"I said, don't call her that" he repeats clenching his fists.
"Justin who the hell do you think you're talking to?" Master yells.
"I'm talking to you. Don't call her that. Don't talk to her like that. And she, as long as I'm breathing will not work on the plantation. The shade of her colour doesn't matter it doesn't define her." Master boils up with anger and turns to look at me.
"Fine I'll let you stay. But if I hear of any mistakes from you, the things I'll do to you will surpass mans imagination." He says pointing at me. I bow my head.
"Thank you sir." I walk back into the kitchen to join Mimi.
"What happened?" She asks concerned. "The masters son stood up for me." I said surprised by this myself.
"Wow. He must really like you he's never done that for anybody." She shrugged.
He must really like you. Her words rushed through my head giving me goosebumps. Masters son must like me.
"Hey, don't you go thinking of ideas remember what I told you." Mimi warned raising her eyebrows. I nod. I need to remember. We can't be together. Black and white should never mix. After master and his family have finished eating they go upstairs and sleep.
"Now it's our turn to eat." Mimi smiled. All the slaves gathered around as Mimi served us all. I looked around seeing slaves licking of every last piece of their food nibbling at the empty plate. After I had eaten, Mimi comes up to me with a pan and inside are a few scrapes of food.
"This is for the slaves working out on the plantation. Ideally, we're not supposed to be feeding them. But, they work so hard and don't get any food. Go through the back door and go around so Master won't see you" I take the large pan and nervously creep out the back door. If master catches me, I'll be out here myself. I walk into the field and see the slaves working. All of them looking skinny and helpless.
"Hey guys." I whisper. None of them notice me.
"Hey, I've got food." Then I see about a billion eyes turn to look at me.
"I'm Indika I work inside. Mimi said I should bring this to you. There should be just about enough for everybody." I smile. I pick little bits of the food and throw it at each and every one of them. In a matter of seconds they've all finished. Looking at me as if asking for more.
"I'm sorry guys. That's all I've got. I'll bring more tomorrow." I shrug.
"Thank you." I hear a tiny voice say but I'm unable to match the voice to the person as it is way too dark outside.
"You're welcome. Have a goodnight." I turn and run.
"Well you're a naughty one aren't you." I hear a whisper say. My whole body goes stone cold as I know it's the master.
"I'm sorry Master, I just I just wanted fresh air." I then hear a big hearty laugh.
"Master? No, it's me Justin." He chuckles. I put my hand on my chest and release a sigh of relief.
"May I ask, what it is you're doing here. Is it really just for fresh air?"
"I don't think I should tell you." I say shaking my head.
"Why?"
"Because I don't trust you. You might tell your father and then I'll be dead." He steps closer to me, picks up my hand and interlocks our pinky fingers. "Your secret is safe with me." He smirks.
"Fine. Mimi sent me here to give the plantation workers food." I said tapping the pan I was holding.
"That's nice of her." He smiled. I then snapped back into reality and remembered what Mimi had told me. "Ugh. I have to go." I muttered running as fast as my legs could take me back into the house. If I keep forgetting Mimi's warning, there will definitely be some terrible consequences.a/n
