09. Henry's Hot Choco
So, yeah, me and Christian flipped out that night over the drawing of Kit...
The next day did not help at all in curing our panic.
Christian had to go off to work while I decided to take the day off to get a lead on this Hook guy- oh, and by finding a lead, I meant talking to Henry about the storybook since he is always flipping out about it.
I sat at the counter in Grannie's diner next to Henry, ordering him a hot chocolate with cinnamon. School had just gotten out and Regina would not be hounding after him for a few hours.
"Thanks for the hot chocolate, Ki- Kat,"Henry mumbled, smiling at me meekly.
"No problem."
After tapping my foot on my chair for a moment, I worked up the courage to ask him.
"Hey, Henry, that book you're always talking about-"
"Once Upon a Time?" He asked eagerly, his face instantly lighting up.
Pulling it out of my bag and setting it on the counter, I smiled back at him. "Yeah, I found it in the library the other day, and, well- this is going to sound really weird but... I think I'm in it."
Okay, did I really believe in this stuff? I wasn't sure. But, I need information, and help... baiting Henry seemed to be the only way to get it.
Henry started to laugh hysterically, slapping his knee. "What? Why are you laughing?"
After catching his breath, he mused,"It took you this long to realize?"
Snorting, I nodded slowly. "Henry, life isn't supposed to have magic and fairies and all of that beautiful stuff- it's rough and harsh. At least, that's what I was raised to believe."
He smiled back at me, nodding his head in understanding while sipping his hot chocolate.
"So, who do you think you are?" He asked me enthusiastically.
"Ehm, well,"I coughed out, flipping through the book to find my page,"I think- I think I might be her?" I pointed to the drawing of the cat girl.
"Yep, that's you alright. Too bad you'll never see Hook- unless... unless this curse gets lifted,"he replied slyly.
My eyes widened in surprise, Henry's directness catching me off guard. "Okay, back up, like, 20,000 feet. First of all, Hook doesn't even exist- that creepy guy whose been wandering around town is just insane!" I yelped, hoping to calm Henry (or maybe just myself).
"Wait, what? What creepy guy?" Henry asked, turning completely away from his drink to focus on me.
Ignoring him, I continued,"Also- curse? What curse?"
"Wait, so you don't actually believe?" He asked sadly, his eyes mimicking those of a kicked puppy. I suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of guilt.
Shaking my head and pushing my hair back, I took a deep breath and attempted to calm him. "I'm sorry, Henry- I didn't mean to make it seem like I don't "believe", I guess you could say... It's just taking me awhile to get used to the fact that somehow I am part of an alternate reality, where stuff like this exists."
Henry also took a deep breath, turning back to his hot chocolate.
"Hey, let's go for a walk and we can talk more, okay?" I asked him hopefully. Henry seemed happy with this idea, so he finished his drink and we left the diner.
--
Over my walk with Henry, I learned many things. Apparently Regina, or the Evil Queen, had put a curse on the people from the book, making them forget about their past lives and believe that they live in a town called- well- Storybrook.
Whether or not I believed this idea was up in the air, but at least I had some information.
I also had to answer one of Henry's question- it being who the creepy man was in relation to Hook. I explained the situation to him as delicately as I could, and he seemed to understand what had happened pretty well. He thinks it is actually Killian Jones here to save me, but for now I need to believe he is a dangerous man set out to hurt me, just to keep myself safe.
At the end of the walk, when we were returning to the diner, Henry told me something interesting.
"I feel a certain way,"he beamed, eyes full of wonder,"like, that the curse will be lifted soon. I think Emma will do it..."
I was almost hoping he would be right.
