Shiori pov:

I smiled at people working for the nightshift as I passed them on the way out of the hospital. I was really looking forward to a nice rest since I had done two surgeries in the last twelve hours....and that was a lot of work! I had to stay focused the whole time and since I was the head surgeon, I had to do the major part of the operation. The only things that I could leave to the assistant doctors and the nurses was giving injections of medicines, anesthetics and closing up the wounds once the major part was done.

My house was just ten minutes away from the Hospital so if any emergency came in at any time of the night, I was the one who would be called in. I usually walked to the Hospital. I did have a car but what's the point in taking a car to your workplace that's barely a few blocks away? I barely got any good exercise for my body so I usually walked to and back from the Hospital. I took out my car only for long distance drives.

Even though I was kind of tired right now, I took a slight detour on the way home. I passed by the 24/7 supermarket and opened my purse so I could buy myself something to drink. I put in three 100 Yen coins into the slot of the vending machine just outside the supermarket and looked at the different choices of drinks available.

"Hmmm....I haven't been able to maintain my skin well lately. Maybe I should have some lemon juice or orange juice....vitamin C is really good for skin after all." I mumbled to myself as I debated which one to buy.

At the moment, I felt like having something that was more so sweet, so I pressed the button for the orange juice. I heard the clang as a bottle fell into the dispenser and I bent down to pick it up. Happy with my choice of a healthy drink, I opened the cap and tilted the bottle to have the first sip as I continued the walk back to my house.

Although, I wouldn't say y choice of a power drink entirely healthy. I hadn't had breakfast yet and a bottle of juice was definitely not a good supplement for a healthy breakfast. But what could I do? It was still barely 5 in the morning! The streets were still dark with not one soul active on the streets. My sleep had been disturbed and I had no mood whatsoever to make myself any breakfast at this time. I guess I could just sleep till ten or something and then make myself something proper to eat.

Yup, that sounded like a plan!

As I walked through the luxury residential block, I stiffened for a moment. I looked up at the sky to the left as I sensed a dark dreary presence. It was the reiatsu of a hollow....one of those many creatures I had sensed and seen popping up in the town every now and then.

I had spoken to many spirits so they had filled me in on some things I didn't know when I first saw a hollow. Apparently, these hollows came here from another dimension....another world of some sort. They usually came to eat spirits that still lingered here. Their source of food itself was reiatsu and during their hunt for spirits, they ended up destroying parts of the human world. This in turn led to humans dying because of accidents with no visible cause. And sometimes, deranged hollows would even devour the souls of living humans too.

It wasn't something that couldn't be taken care of though. I usually saw people dressed in black and wielding swords appearing soon after, jumping on rooftops and destroying the hollows with little or no effort. I had seen them many times....people that you would call as shinigami. There weren't many others who could see them so the work of hollows was usually narrowed down as a strange natural phenomenon due to changed weather conditions. And when the shinigami destroyed the hollow, everything would come back to normal...well, so to say.

It was a never ending cycle. I didn't know where the hollows came from or how they were even created or born or whatever you call it.

Nonetheless, the feel of the dark reiatsu of a hollow always made me uneasy. The thing that made me uneasy is that the spirits I spoke to said that I had a reiastu higher than most humans. My reiatsu was the only reason why I had a deeper connection to my subconscious mind and I could see spirits and hollows and shinigami. I don't really understand what they meant when they said I had a better connection with my subconscious, because honestly, I didn't feel any special or spiritual compared to others.
