The weekend passed by painfully slow, the majority of my time being spent on studying for the exam I had in my Music History class. I only went out once to jog around the neighborhood, finding it relaxing after hours of reading articles on the world's most flours musicians. On Monday, classes dragged on and everything was a blur. At break time, I decided to take up Melissa's offer and sit with her group of friends beside the bookstore. They were an amusing group, always laughing and making me feel welcomed.
Besides Melissa, there was Tyler, a very outgoing football player who took no bullshit from anyone. He was tall in stature, towering over us all at 6 feet and 3 inches. Tyler was intimidating at first, but turned out to be an absolute sweetheart once I got to know him.
Andrea was the quietest one, but left an impact every time she spoke. The entire group would grow silent and stay attentive to her words, taking them in because they didn't know when she would speak again. She always carried her books and her headphones with her, tuning herself out from the world when she felt it was necessary.
Shania was the jokester, always finding opportunities to slip a joke into the conversation. She was stunning, too. Perfect braids fell down her back, reaching her waist when pulled to the front. Her dark skin was clear and without blemish, her eyes shining with happiness at all times. I found myself the most comfortable with her, hoping that we could become closer over time.
Break time came to an abrupt end, leaving me hopeful for the days to come. I trudged through the hallway, trying to put off going to Music History. It was mainly because Justin was in there. I didn't want to face him.
I was really trying my best to ignore him, to prevent him from entering my life. I tried desperately to build walls around me that he would never be able to break down.
Just as I figured, there he was, sitting in a new seat today. He leaned back in the seat next to mine, tapping his fingers against the top of the table. He looked around the classroom, his eyes darting to each corner. Spotting me at the doorway, he smiled and kept his gaze on me as I walked slowly to my seat.
I kept my eyes on the floor as I walked, trying to keep the contact to a minimum today. I felt his eyes remain on me even as I pulled my chair out to sit down, feeling uncomfortable because of the continuous stares.
"Hey," He said, propping his head up with his hand as he tilted it to the side, trying to see my face through my hair that covered it.
"Hi," I said shortly, pulling my notebook out to distract myself until class began. There was an awkward silence between us until he spoke once more.
"What's up with you today?" He laughed, watching me draw seriously in my notebook. His eyebrows furrowed as I ignored his question.
"Nothing," I finally shrugged, hearing Professor James come through the front door. I let out a sigh of relief and shut my notebook, shoving it back into my bag.
Justin groaned and crossed his arms against his chest as he watched me sit quietly beside him. Professor James pulled the exam papers out of his suitcase, walking down the rows to pass them out.
"Is it something I did?"
I laughed and thanked our professor for placing the exam in front of me, and he shushed Justin in the process. I skimmed over my paper quickly, writing my name at the top and starting at question one.
Justin poked my side during the exam, watching me squirm at the contact. He tried to suppress his laughter as he continued to bother me.
"Cut the shit," I tried to sound angry, but failed and ended up laughing loudly. The professor glared at me from the front of the class, and some students turned around to see what I was laughing at.
Justin hung his head low, pretending like he had nothing to do with the situation. He stared down at his paper with a smirk on his face.
"Jasmine," he whispered continuously, aware that his behavior was pissing me off.
"Justin, shut up," I groaned, writing down the answer to one of the questions. He peeked at my paper and copied my answer word-for-word.
Professor James walked over to us, staring down at our papers while his glasses hung from the tip of his nose. He turned my paper around, making it easier for him to read. His eyes moved along the words, his head nodding in surprise.
"So far so good. Continue," He said quietly, placing my paper back down. I smiled thankfully and continued my work, occasionally peeking up at him as he read Justin's blank exam. He tutted after reading the only answer Justin had on his paper, scolding him for not having much done.
Class continued slowly, the hand on the clock seeming to move mockingly. I turned my paper in after ten minutes, laying my head on the table as I waited for everyone to finish. Justin still worked beside me, occasionally muttering profanities under his breath. Every time I heard him, I looked at him and laughed at his reactions. With a final "fuck this," he rose to his feet and threw the paper onto the professor's desk.
He returned to his seat and pulled his phone out, checking the time. Seeing that there was still twenty minutes left of class, he nudged my arm to grab my attention. He nodded his head to toward the door, his lips mouthing the words "ditch with me."
I bit my lip, contemplating the offer. Deciding that I couldn't handle any more time in the classroom, we waited until Professor James wasn't looking to sneak out the back door.
Making our way out, Justin shut the door quietly and grabbed my hand, dragging me behind him.
"Where are we even going?" I laughed breathlessly, feeling him walk faster through the hallway. He ignored my question, leading me up a staircase that I had never seen before. It led us to a secluded hallway, one with large double doors at the end. We walked out the doors only to be met with empty space and a beautiful view.
The school rooftop.
I gasped as I felt the cold breeze hit my face, making me hug myself for warmth. Justin finally let go of my hand, taking a seat in the middle of the rooftop. I followed suit, copying his actions. We propped our knees up and stared out into the skyline, seeing the bustling city of Los Angeles.
"How many girls have you brought up here?" I laughed, teasing him. There was a hint of curiosity in my voice. I really did wonder if I was the first one to be here with him. Probably not, my conscience chimed in.
He smiled shyly and continued looking out at the city.
"You want the truth?" He asked, turning his face to look at me. I bit my lip, nodding my head. "None."
I raised my eyebrows, a laugh escaping from my lips. Covering my mouth with my hand, I felt embarrassed for laughing at his confession.
"I'm serious," He chuckled, playing with his shoelaces. "You're the only one who has ever been here with me."
I didn't know what to say to him, so I just sat silently beside him, admiring the view before us.
"I come here alone to think. I don't think anyone else has ever been up here."
"Why am I the first to be up here with you?" I laughed, pulling my sleeves down to cover my cold hands.
He lifted his hood over his head, the dirty blonde strands of hair peeking out from underneath.
Shrugging, he looked over at me with a smile on his face.
"You're cool," was all he said, his cheeks becoming pink at his admission.
I felt my smile grow wider, lifting my sleeve-covered hands to cover my face. He laughed at me, scooting closer to my body. Our thighs brushed against each other quickly, both of us retracting from the unexpected contact.
"You're alright, I guess," I finally replied, earning a smirk from Justin.
He's found a way to charm me again.
