Madison's POV

All I could hear was whispering from down the hall as I tossed my bag into the guest room. Seeing as I didn't live here when I left, a room isn't really held for me.

"Okay, but what about her? She can't just..." someone whispered, another voice cutting in, "–look, something happened in LA that she's not telling me about, we can't just bombard her with questions."

I heard a light knock on the door, Lydia's face already through the crack. I could see the distress in her eyes, the way her mouth curved seeming nervous.

"I'm still me, you know," I started, shrugging, "You can still speak to me and I'll talk back and we can have a conversation."

She smiled, a small anxious laugh coming from her mouth, "I know, I know. I just... you left me here with no explanation, Madison! I was left in the dark... I didn't know where you were or if you were okay or why you left, I just knew you did... and that was heartbreaking enough."

She finally let a single tear slip, wiping it as quickly as she could. It hurt me that I made her feel like this, but I really didn't expect it from her.

"Lyd, I didn't think–"

"You're right! You didn't think! You left us all! How did you think that was going to make us feel?! As you said, you didn't think. You never do. It's just Cal and Michael all over again–"

I cut into Lydia's harsh rant, "Don't bring them into this!"

"–All you do is hurt people and not take the blame. Stop waiting for someone to fix your faults because we're all tired of picking up after you."

Calum opened the door, his eyes wide when Lydia finally stopped shouting, pushing past him and to the front door.

Calum looked speechless, staring at me without blinking. The tears that were coating my eyes stayed below my lower lid, not allowing them to drip and wash away my strength.

He let out a shaky breath, "We, um, we were listening from the kitchen."

"You don't have to say anything."

For once, he listened to me. He nodded, joining me to sit on the bed. We sat there for a few minutes, neither of us daring to speak. I really ruined things. I really wish Lydia was wrong, but she could never be so right.

"What happened in LA?"

I zoned back into reality, "W-What?"

Cal spoke again, repeating what he had said, "What happened in LA? When I got there and you thought your mother called me, you were so quick to defend yourself. What happened?"

I froze. It wasn't that I didn't want to tell him, I just didn't think I'd have to come clean so soon.

"Where are the other boys?" I changed subjects.

"What?"

I stood up, leaving Calum alone and unanswered in the guest room of Luke's new house.

I entered the kitchen, seeing Luke sat on the counter with a beer in his hand. In the short 6 months that I had left, his facial hair had grown in immensely, and he was starting to wear his hair down instead of his normal updo. He looked older, the beer bottle not helping.

"I didn't think you'd come back," he said softly, leaning his head back on the cupboard.

"I didn't think so either."

He gestured to the refrigerator, "There's beer and coolers in the fridge, you kind of look like you need one."

I declined politely, attempting to have casual small talk with my brother, "Ashton went with Lydia?"

He nodded, "He said something about her being destructive when she's angry."

The thought of Lydia being upset with me was so unknown, almost never feeling this detached from her.

Calum finally joined us, "The Hemmings reunion, I see."

I chuckled lightly with Luke, my truest laugh not being able to function.

I held my head in my hand, sighing, "I really screwed things up around here, didn't I?"

Calum and Luke shared sideways glances, almost contemplating secrecy through eye contact.

Luke finally looked towards me, "There's one more thing we haven't talked about..."

My heart ached heavily as I saw the topic coming, the colourful-haired boy I used to love suddenly filling my memory.

This was going to be a long afternoon.
