"Look who finally decided to come home." Luke said as I walked through the door with my bag. I hugged him, "I'm off for winter break but after that I need to start a new semester off." "What are you studying again?" he said, carrying my bag to my room as I followed. "Journalism, or maybe I should say English since you don't know what journalism is." He swatted my hand away as I tried to pinch his cheeks. "Why are you pinching my cheeks, I'm older than you!" he laughed. "So where are mum and dad?" I said, flicking my dark brown hair behind my shoulder. "Dad's at work, Mom's out in the garden." he said before leaving me to see my birth giver. I hardly ever see my family anymore ever since I went off to college, but a girls got to get herself an education, you know? I can't just make a band and tour with One Direction like Luke did. Being the sister of the "world famous" Luke Hemmings isn't as glamorous as it seems. You can't even check twitter without someone trying to get your brother to follow them through you! But I do love my brother to bits so I guess it's alright. I slid the screen door open and closed it, walking up behind my mother. "Luke, sweetheart, can you get me a glass of water?" she said, refusing to look away from her dying petunias. "Could I get a hug first?" I said, watching her head snap towards me, a smile bursting from her face. "Madison, oh it's so good to see you!" she screeched. I saw my mum a little over a month ago, but seeing her now made my eyes water.
The whole afternoon went on like so, Mum asking if I was in a relationship and me saying no, her asking if I had any boy toys and me saying no, her asking if I am sexually active and me saying no. I don't think she gets the message..
It was mid November, the trees changing colours and bracing themselves for winter. Luke and his band, 5 seconds of summer, had just gotten off tour for the year. I haven't seen Luke in almost 2 years. He was always so busy with his music and I was getting ready for college and before you know it, I never saw him. Of course we texted and facetimed now and then but it never really felt like this. It was good to be home. Dad came home at 6 that night, absolutely thrilled to see me and he was glad I made it home in one piece. Although we live in Australia, I got a scholarship to attend school in the US, New York to be exact. I got a plane ticket for last night and here I am!
"Mum, is it okay if Michael sleeps over tonight? We're writing a song." Luke said. "Do you boys ever stop? Of course, honey just don't be too noises and don't disturb Madison." she laughed as Luke ran upstairs to his room. "I think I'm going to go sleep for a bit, jet lag's a bitch. Wake me for dinner?" I asked nicely, hoping she didn't catch me cussing. "Sure sweety, You should be able to get 2 hours in." she said, and with that I was up the stairs, into my old room. Nothing had been moved or shuffled, it looks exactly how it did 2 years ago. I opened my window, the crisp air of almost-winter whisking some papers off my desk. I stepped on the ledge, putting my leg out onto the roof. I remember when I was 15, I sat out here with the boy I liked and he tried to touch me in places I didn't want to be touched and then out of no where, Michael appeared and pushed him off the damn roof. That's one of my only memories of Michael but he was always nice to me. I situate myself, hugging my knees to my chest as I look at my old street. It's almost as if I went back in time, it was creepy how nothing changed.
"Hey." A voice said from the window, making me jump. I gripped a shingle, trying not to fall. I turned back seeing an amused Michael stifling a laugh. "Sorry." he said, his hands tucked into his knit black sweater. "What are you doing here?" I asked, taking his hand as he helped me inside. As I stood normally he pulled me into a warm hug. "How's college? Too rough on you?" he laughed, pulling at my eyebrow piercing. "It's good, glad I get a break. And don't pick at mine if I can't pick at yours." I say, wiggling his silver eyebrow candy. "I'll see you later, Madison. Gotta go write a song about how beautiful you are." he kissed my cheek and ran out of my room. Did he just... flirt with me? He was only 2 years older but I never expected him to be the one to flirt. Calum always seemed to show interest in me but I never really saw him that way. I listened as Michael told Luke that he was in the bathroom, before picking up his acoustic and strumming a few chords.
