Summer flew by, and it was a cold winter’s morning. I’d spent so many hours with the Beta, it was almost unreal.

My father never needed to know.

No one ever needed to know.

I was just in the cafeteria, picking up a milkshake. Then, my friend started babbling.

It was that day, that my whole life was turned up and down and back again.
“Have you heard? The Beta’s new love interest is that one, there” She pointed to a thin, blond girl. “Aw. So sweet, right? She is sixteen, so we can’t exactly be jealous. She’s well out of our league”

I started to run down the corridors, down to where my mate would be. He wasn’t there. I’d have to wait, think they were rumours.

Just when the world is bright,

it turns dark.

I could never be over him. It was like we were literally bound together; like some invisible string held us in place, next to each other.

As I guessed, my father found my mate a place on the other side of the world.

For three years.

He found us in one of our ‘secret places’. Luckily, we were just talking.

“What? What is this?” He shouted, tremors rolling down his body.

No. No. Please don’t go wolf on me.

He stopped shaking, as he steadied himself on the tree next to him.

“Nothing” I told him.

“Beta, you are to come with me. You have disobeyed the Alpha’s orders”

“Sir, I am the Beta, I am the only pack member who can choose to disobey your orders, as long as my decision to disobey you is for a good reason”

He scowled. “You are very lucky I want my daughter to be happy” He paused, pursing his lips. “So it came at a good time…”

There was an uncomfortable silence.

“…that there are rogues running wild in Austrailia. I know it is not our turf, but they have asked for our help. We are the most powerful pack in the world, you know”

“Yes, Alpha”

“The plane leaves tomorrow at eight sharp. If you don’t get there, you’re swimming”

As soon as my father left, sadness didn’t have time to wash over me.

Sure enough, lust filled each part of my body as he leaned into me, pressing his lips to my neck. His grey eyes searched for mine, but if I looked into them, I knew I would lose myself in uncontrollable sadness.

“Beta, beta”

“Call me Colton!” He ordered angrily. It was so odd. I’d never called him by his name before. I found it amazing how he never sounded breathless at my touch. I was always breathless.

“Why are you angry, Colton?” I said, backing out of him, still being careful not to look in his eyes.

“Why aren’t you looking at me?” He ordered suddenly.

Why was he acting like a jerk? What had I done? Not been born early enough for him

“Because then I’ll be sad” I murmured.

“Don’t you think I’m sad?”

“No, not at the moment”

His grey, stormy eyes, with flecks of gold and brown in them, found mine. They were angry. I couldn’t understand why.

“When did you get moody? You’re the one going for an Australian holiday, where all the she-wolfs will be chasing you down, and you can just go, yeah, yeah, I’ll give it a try. Because where is the commitment, Colton? You’ve cheated before and you’ll do it again! But this time, I’ll never need to know. I never needed to know a week ago, until Annabelle told me you have a secret romance. What a mate you are! You go on these secret…things with me, and pretend to be all loved-up, but I know, I’m not the wolf that is always on your mind. Mates never fight. But you, you, your, your, just, just…the beta, and I’m just the alpha’s daughter. For all I know, I could just be practice”

There was silence.

“People just don’t understand me!” I stood up, stomping my foot. “I’m a freak! I’m that freak who got mated when she was thirteen! I’m the freak that doesn’t care about any other boy in the school that’s drooling over me. Wouldn’t it be nice to be normal? I wouldn’t know.” The last words were hissed, and I felt hot, as my outburst was so sudden. “I’ll wave you goodbye and maybe; just maybe, a smile will be on my face. We’re exact opposites. The stars that reflect us are opposite each other, but facing in different ways”

I stormed off, tears welling in my eyes.
