XXIII- Orion
I paced in front of the long table covered in papers. My brother and Zilla sat in front of me, searching the piles.
The schools library was empty of other students that evening. Only us and a napping librarian were present.
"This is starting to scare me guys," Zilla gulped, anxiously shifting in her seat. "Why would they be doing all this stuff?"
Paperwork and documents all from the lairs shop were scattered across the table.
"Caesar was a professor of medicine at Merlin University too!" Owen stated. "That's incredible! Apparently he mysteriously dropped out one day. Never came back."
"Hm," I rubbed my chin trying to process this all. "We need more though! There's something we're missing. Something right under our noses."
Suddenly the library doors squeaked open. Charlie entered carrying a stack of books. Quickly, we scooped up the papers and hid them as we approached us.
"Hey guys," he smiled while placing the books on the table.
"Hey Charlie," we all spoke in unison.
He took a seat next to Owen and opened up his book when Zilla got up and moved next to him.
"Hey Charlie, is it okay if I ask you a question?" She smiled.
He looked and her and nodded.
"Okay, I'm not trying to sound snoopy or anything, but what is it like being a demon?"
The question looked like it caught him by surprise. Taking a moment to think about it he finally spoke up.
"Well I dunno. It's interesting I guess. I mean how do you feel being half gorgon?"
Zilla paused then said, "touché."
Charlie went back to his studying when the library clock gave off a loud ding.
Gazing at the time I nearly fell over.
"IM LATE!" I shrieked, grabbing my coat.
And with that, I headed out into that rainy evening.
...
The rain splashed under my feet as I ran down Main Street. Merlin Cities lights shimmered around me along with the sound of cars racing through the water.
Above the city, the regiment building stood tall and proud. Entering under its roof, the Merlin Statue loomed over me like a giant.
Just as I opened the door to the regiment building, I was welcomed by the smell of freshly brewed coffee.
The warm atmosphere felt nice since I was soaking wet.
A familiar laugh suddenly snapped me out of my trance.
"I see the storm got you very vell, Wolf Bite," Boris chuckled while approaching me.
Shaking the water from my hair I also gave off a snort.
"Got caught up in...homework," I lied.
He nodded just as Dax came storming down the stairs, accompanied by Harold.
"Great! Now I have to deal with that lunatic!" He hissed while snatching his coat from the hat stand by the door.
He turned to me and sighed. "Alright, kid. Today we're taking a field trip to one of the weirdest places you'll ever visit."
He paused then hissed, "The Department of Magic Mishaps."
"Dun, dun, duuuuh," Boris gasped then having a laugh follow afterwards. "I have no idea vhy you are vorked up over dat place. I like it. Dey are very nice, no?"
"Wait, where are we going?" I asked.
"This is the department that takes care of mortals getting into magic, time traveling anomalies and it's also the laboratory that is using the DNA you got to create something we can use against the The Shadow Master," Dax explained. "Basically a bunch of weirdos work there."
We all exited the building where Harold opened an umbrella. Crowding under the umbrella Dax spoke up again.
"Then Donovan bailed out on coming just because he doesn't want to deal with...him," Dax groaned.
"Who is this him you speak of," I asked as we approached the end of the Merlin Hall where the entryway to The Department of Magic Mishaps stood.
Just as Boris opened the door we were welcomed by loud 80's music, and an extremely messy laboratory.
"OH THE COPPERS ARE HERE!" A maniac like laugh cackled.
"Him," Dax hissed.
A tall, tan man in a lab coat zoomed in front of us on a metal cart laughing.
"Oh I've been expecting my favorite little soldiers!" He laughed jumped off the cart, letting it wheel off on its own.
He paraded over to us where I got a good look at him. Crazy purple hair was tasseled back. The purple of his hair matched the shade of violet on his left eye. The other eye was a sea green tint.
On this mans right ear was a dream catcher earring which dangled around as he moved with cat like energy.
My eyes hurt when they reached his tie die shirt under his lab coat. Blinking a couple times I failed to realize him shaking my hand which so much strength he practically threw me into the air.
"A NEWBIE!" He sung. "Oh how lovely!"
I gulped and Boris exclaimed, "Orion this is Eureka. He is head figure of The Department of Magic Mishaps."
"H-hi," I squeaked and he gave off a bright smile.
"Well Orion my boy," he said slapping my back. "Welcome to the place where we go after dreams but always get distracted by food."
We walked down the laboratory where I saw all sorts of people working on different tasks. I also couldn't help to notice that every work station had a lava lamp...
Scientists scurried around with bubbling liquid or smoking items. Some guy was even on fire, but Eureka didn't seem to be bothered by that.
We followed him into a separate laboratory that seemed to be full of more dangerous chemicals. That worried me, you see.
"Now after your little encounter with the big bad demon I managed to work up a little something," Eureka said then picking up a beaker full of glowing purple liquid.
"Is dat it?" Boris awed.
"What! No! This is my protein drink," Eureka laughing taking a sip from it. He sighed and placed the drink down the pulled out a glove from under some glass container.
Eureka carefully placed it on the counter where we stared at it for a moment. Finally Dax said, "are you going to eat it?"
Eureka rolled his eyes and said, "noooo. I'm not. This glove has the DNA of The Shadow Master on it. So when your wearing it you use it to remove his mask and then you can eat it."
He laughed and said, "just kidding, don't eat it. The glove isn't quite ready though. I'm thinking maybe next week you can pick it up. Saturday if you do a funny dance out of here."
He laughed again as Dax rolled his eyes.
"So when do we attack then? We should probably do it where lots of people are," I stated.
Boris snapped his fingers. "The annual Halloween Masquerade!"
"The what?" I frowned.
"It's a stupid Masquerade on Halloween that he always crashes because of bunch of idiots decide it would be funny to wear masks like his," Dax explained. "Honestly, I don't see why people go. It's the same year after year."
"It won't this year," I smiled. "Because we're going to take his mask off this time!"
