When the sun seeped into the room through the window, Melody forced herself to stand up from her curled position on the floor. She walked through the door that connected her room to Garroths' old one, and opened the top drawer of her dresser. The only thing inside was the scarf that Garroth had given her the day that he left. Slowly, Melody picked up the light blue piece of fabric, and remembered the day that she had tried to block from her memory. She remembered how she had fallen to her knees when the he had disappeared from her sight, she remembered the way Garroths' eyes had lit up when he learned he was going to guard camp. And as she wrapped the old scarf around her neck, she remembered the way he had protected her from the storm, and how he once told her that he would always be there for her. And this time, the memories did not hurt, they were fond memories, meant to be cherished. Though her closets brothers were gone now, she would still carry on. Perhaps she could use this as an opportunity to become closer with Zane. But though Melody tried to look on the positive side, she knew that she had lost another brother, and no matter what she told herself, it crushed her when Vylad jumped out that window. Mindlessly, she rubbed the smooth little turquoise stone on her bracelet, and it soothed her. As she got dressed and brushed her hair, it came to her that she might be suspected of helping Vylad escape. Though she supposed she did help him, if her father knew, there would be hell to pay, no doubt about that. But she had experience with lying, so she figured she could say she slept through the night peacefully. That she had no idea Vylad wanted to leave, which wasn't really a lie. So when she went to breakfast that morning, she put on a poker face, and prepared to pretend to have her heart broken again when she 'found out'. But the halls had a supernatural quality to them, as if she wasn't completely sure if she was awake or dreaming. When Garroth left she had time to mentally prepare herself, Vylads' departure had been completely out of the blue. In a vain hope, she wondered if it had all been a dream, a nightmare. But when she arrived at the breakfast table, and saw Vylads' seat empty, reality came crashing down upon her, and she had to throw away any hope that Vylad was still here.

"Melody.' Her fater, lord Garte said to her as she sat down to eat. "have you seen Vylad this morning? When the servants went to wake him, they said he was missing. Do you know anything about this?" Melody forced herself to look confused, and a touch worried.

"No, I haven't seen him. I got dressed and came here." Melody replied.

"Hmph. If we can't find him within a few hours, we can just tell the public that we sent him to guard camp or something." Lord Garte said, seeming pleased with himself for finding a solution to the problem. Now Melody was really confused. Why would father want the people to think that Vykad had  been sent away?

"Father, why would you lie to the people and tell them anything other than the truth?" Melody asked him. But before he could reply, Zane spoke.

"So that they don't think anything is wrong, it's easier to control them if they are calm and relaxed." Zane spoke with an attitude that made it seem as if it should be obvious.

"Control them!? They are our people! We shou-" Melody began to say, raising her voice in indignation.

"Enough! Melody! You have said quite enough! Go to your room, I will have the servants bring you breakfast later." Lord Garte shouted, cutting Melody off. Cheeks blazing with fury and embarrassment, Melody stalked off to her room, but as she was leaving, she heard her father mutter to her mother,

"Its about time we marry that girl off to some lords' son."

Melody barely made it through the door to her room without making any noise. Once she shut the door, she shuddered and gasped. Marry me off!? No! I wouldn't even know the person, and I can't be married off like some object he owns! He can't! He just can't! No! No please!

"No please. No, he can't, no, No please, he can't do this to me" Melody muttered over and over again, not even aware she was speaking out loud. She wished for someone to save her, as much as it pained her to admit that she needed saving. She couldn't run away, she had no survival skills, she couldn't even navigate her way through town. She couldn't leave and it was impossible to stay, Melody was trapped, and she needed her brothers more than ever, but neither Garroth nor Vylad were anywhere to be seen, as Melody cried in her room, wishing for someone to save her.
