CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

--

"Stop telling me jokes, Luke, please," Julie giggles quietly, using both of her hands to play with one of Luke's. They were both laying on Luke's bed the following morning, and he was telling her a collection of cheesy jokes while she was trying not to laugh at how ridiculous they were.

"I know you're loving these, babe," he grins over at her, lacing their fingers together.

"I've gotta start getting ready soon." Her lips pull into a pout. "Have I left any clothes here?" She questions hopefully and Luke nods, pointing over to the dresser with his foot.

"Top left drawer." She nods and separates herself from him. She opens the drawer, pulling out a pair of leggings.

"There's only a tank top in here," she groans. "I could've sworn I've left more here."

"Just take a shirt, princess, you never had a problem with it before," he teases and she rolls her eyes at him, taking a shirt from the closet. After changing her clothes, not caring if Luke was watching, she sits on the side of the bed by Luke, brushing through her hair.

"I really don't feel like going to class," she mutters, tossing the brush to the side and moving her hand over to run her fingers through his hair.

"Ditch for me," he suggests with a grin, his eyes closed as she presses a light kiss to his forehead.

"I can't ditch, love, my professor is assigning a project today, and I'd rather not miss the instructions." Luke groans quietly and she laughs in amusement, checking her phone for the time. "I've gotta get going," she sighs, pushing herself away from Luke and off the bed and he follows. "I'll come by later if I can, if that's fine with you," she offers as they both stop at the front door, Luke opening it for her.

"Of course that's fine, princess." He leans down to kiss her forehead before moving down to meet their lips together. "I'll see you later." She nods before making her way out of the flat and down to her car.

...

"At least we get to work with a partner," Noah points out with a small smile, trying to be optimistic. Both Noah and Julie were majoring in education to be teachers, so they had three classes together, including the one with Matthew.

"Yeah, but it's a lot of work," she pouts, dropping her head on her arms. "When should we get started?"

"I don't have any other classes today so if you're free as well, we can start today," he shrugs. Julie thinks it over in her head, not remembering making any plans, so she shrugs too and nods.

"That should work. Did Matthew drive you?"

"Yup," Noah answers, holding the building door open for her.

"Okay, good then he can make it home."

Fifteen minutes later, the two of them are sat on opposite sides of Noah's bed, researching for their assignment.

"Is this a good site?" Julie wonders, moving over next to Noah to show him her laptop. He looks over the website quickly and nods with a shrug so she saves it and continues searching, settling in the spot next to him.

After over an hour of working on the project – with a few short breaks which consisted of Noah trying to braid her hair and the both of them finishing an entire package of Oreos – they decide to call it day, packing up all their stuff. "Why hasn't Matthew come back yet?" Noah questions as Julie ties her hair up and he lays his head in her lap.

"Probably at my place, making out with Mae," she laughs, patting his face with both of her hands. Julie's phone starts buzzing loudly next to her, making her jump which makes Noah laugh. "Shut up," she grits quietly, but a small chuckle slips through her lips. "Hello?" She finally answers.

"Hey, princess," Luke greets, instantly bringing a smile to Julie's face. She gently moves Noah's head off her lap, holding her finger up and making her way out of the room.

"Hi, Luke," she grins, leaning against the wall beside the door.

"I thought you were coming over, I had to sit around with Calum all day and it was boring and I still miss you." Luke's lips pull into a pout as Julie giggles quietly.

"I completely forgot, Luke, I'm sorry," she sighs, rubbing over her face. "The project we got assigned turned out to be a partner thing, so I'm working with Noah and we decided to go ahead and get started on it. I'm at his flat right now," she explains.

"You're at his flat? Just the two of you?" He mumbles, ruffling up his hair.

"Um, yeah," she replies with a shrug. "Noah and I hang out alone a lot of the time, Luke, it's nothing to worry about."

"Julie, you're alone with a single guy in his flat, I think I'm allowed to worry," he huffs and Julie rolls her eyes.

"No, Luke, you're not because it doesn't matter if Noah is single or not. If I can trust you to be across the globe for almost a month, then you can trust me being alone with my friend at his place."

"What is that supposed to mean?" He scoffs.

"It means, I trusted you, regardless of your history, so I think you should calm that whole jealous boyfriend act down."

"I'm not your boyfriend, Julie, you know I don't do that shit," he grumbles and Julie huffs out a breath in annoyance.

"You're right, my bad Luke, I forgot that you're just keeping me around until you get bored with me," she chuckles sarcastically.

"That's not what I said, I have never said that to you."

"Well, you might as well have, because why else would you even be bothering with me anymore?" Luke stays silent which pretty much answers Julie's question and she bites her lip to make it stop quivering. "When you figure what exactly you want from me," she speaks up after a minute or two of silence, "let me know." With that, she brings the phone down from her ear and ends the call, stuffing her phone in her pocket.

"Is everything okay?" Noah asks, taking in the distressed look on her face when she walks back in the room.

"Everything's fine," she lies simply, grabbing her laptop and placing it back on her lap.
