CHAPTER FORTY
--
Julie suddenly seemed unable to talk to Luke. She didn't ask him how the show went as she'd been doing since the start of the tour; she didn't answer the few texts he sent her after the show and the following morning; and she ignored the two calls he'd made the next day. She didn't exactly know why she all of a sudden didn't want to talk to her own boyfriend who hadn't done anything wrong, she just couldn't.
Luke was starting to pick up on the fact that she wasn't answering when he knew she'd be free to talk and became frantic at the thought of her being upset with him for something or something happening to her. He'd sent her numerous texts after it had been almost a week since he'd heard from her and it took him a while to finally receive a response.

The second Luke receives her texts he calls her instead of texting a reply. Julie stares at her vibrating phone for a few moments as Luke's name flashes on her screen along with the photo of the two of them she had set as his contact icon. She licks her lips and sighs quietly, hesitantly grabbing the phone off of her bed and sliding to answer.
"Babe?" He calls when she doesn't say anything.
"Yeah, I'm here," she replies, her voice quiet as she shuffles under her bed covers.
"What's wrong?" He breathes and Julie can hear the concern laced in his hoarse voice.
"Nothing," she lies, biting down on her lip softly.
"I'm serious, baby," he deadpans. "What's going on?" I'm tired of missing you, she wanted to say, but she decides against it, knowing it would make him more upset.
"Nothing's going on," she says instead. "I promise."
"Why have you been ignoring me?"
"I haven't." Another lie. He breathes out in frustration and she feels her throat choke, suddenly having the urge to cry. "I'm sorry." Her voice breaks and Luke sits up in his own bed, not expecting the noise.
"Are you crying?" When she doesn't respond, he tries again. "Princess, please don't cry. I don't know what to do; I don't know what's wrong." He hated feeling helpless when she was upset.
"I'm not crying," she tells him, which wasn't a total lie. Her eyes were welling up but she refused to let any tears go. "You'll be home soon." She changes the topic away from her to keep him from questioning any further.
"Yeah," he mumbles, but he doesn't sound too happy about it.
"What's wrong? Aren't you excited? I mean I know you'll only be here for, like, four or five days, but at least you'll be here." She tugs at the ends of her hair nervously, not knowing why Luke sounds upset about coming back home.
"My mom asked if I'd come spend the time back at home. At my old house." He says it so quietly almost as if he didn't even want Julie to hear. Which was partially true.
"Oh." And this was worse than the feeling of disappointment she always felt whenever he had to get off the phone for something. This was much worse because if she didn't see him then she wouldn't for another two months.
"But she said you could come too," he adds quickly, his voice almost cheerful. "She really likes you." Julie's bottom lip quivers as she shakes her head, unable to fight back her tears now.
"I can't miss school." Her voice is shaky and Luke is certain she's crying and he wants to kick himself for being the cause. Neither of them say anything for a short while as Luke listens to his girlfriend's sniffles, trying to come up with something to say to make her feel at least a little bit better. "You should go see your family, Luke. They always have to come first." She means every word she's saying, not an ounce of bitterness in her tone.
"I'm sorry, princess." He breathes heavily, the guilt weighing down on him. "I swear, on our next break, I'm going to spend every day with you," he promises seriously in an attempt to ease up the thoughts of going so long without her.
"Alright." She lets out a quiet, sad laugh, wiping at her swollen eyes. "I should go, it's late." Even though she didn't have any classes the next day and she'd stayed up longer on the phone with Luke on nights when she had an early class the following day.
"Oh, um," he almost argues for her to stay on for at least a little while longer, but decides she sounded tired enough and he should let her sleep. "Okay. I'll call you tomorrow." He isn't sure how much time he'd have to talk but he was fearing the fate of his relationship so he would make time.
"Okay," she replies doubtfully, having heard that empty promise numerous times before. They both don't say anything and Luke wonders if she'll just hang up again so he speaks up.
"I love you."
And that manages to bring a small, but real, smile to Julie face.
"I love you, too."
