CHAPTER TWELVE

--

The entire next day while Julie was at work, the tension between her and Charlotte was thick. Charlotte continued to send Julie glares - she guessed Charlotte believed Luke made her leave because of her and that's why she was mad - while Julie would try her best to ignore her.

"Hey, Julie," Charlotte snaps, actually approaching her for the first time.

"What Charlotte?" Julie sighs, looking up to meet her eyes. She was on her way to the registers to take over for one of the other employees and happened to run into Charlotte on one of the aisles while she was stocking.

"What the hell is going on between you and Luke? Because you're telling me nothing is going on, but Luke fucking made me leave yesterday because of you." She points her painted nail at Julie and she scrunches her eyebrows in confusion.

"What do you mean he made you leave because of me?" She questions.

"After you left, he told me I had to go because he 'couldn't do that to you' or something, I don't know," Charlotte explains with a huff, crossing her arms.

"Do what to me?" She continues to ask questions, still confused with why Charlotte was even mad at her.

"I don't know," Charlotte groans, "I guess have sex with another girl."

"You say another girl like I'm someone to him, I'm not -" Julie cuts herself off when Charlotte looks behind her and she turns around, coming face to face with Luke.

"I'll leave you two to talk," Charlotte mumbles, walking past Luke. Julie's about to stop her when Luke starts talking.

"Why have you been ignoring me?" He asks straight to the point.

"What?" She starts walking away, but Luke gently grabs her arm to stop her. "Luke, I'm supposed to be going back to the front to take over for Lily," she sighs. He lets her walk, following her and lets out a breath when she hears his footsteps behind her.

"Juliette, seriously, why have you been ignoring me?" He repeats when they reach the register.

"Stop calling me that," she mutters, typing something in the register just so she doesn't have to look at Luke.

"Tell me why you've been ignoring me," he demands quietly and she finally looks up and meets his eyes. "I like your hair, princess," he murmurs, reaching over and curling a strand around his finger.

"Thank you," she nods, avoiding his eyes again.

"Okay, sorry," he shakes his head as he retracts his hand. "Are you gonna tell me what's up and why you're ignoring me?"

"I think we should stop, um, hanging out or whatever you wanna call it," Julie mumbles, her voice barely audible but Luke catches it.

"What are you talking about?" He chuckles, licking his lips.

"I don't know, Luke, I'm just - having you in my life is starting to stress me out, you know? I just think we should -"

"Is this about Charlotte?" He cuts in. "Because, I swear I'm not gonna, like, talk to her or anything like that anymore."

"See, Luke," she sighs, shaking her head. "That's what you do and I don't want to be involved with someone like that. Someone who fucks a girl and then never speaks to her again, acts like she doesn't even exist anymore because she's useless to them now," her voice cracks slightly.

"Juliette, we didn't have sex." He reaches his hands up to tug at his blonde hair in exasperation.

"Because I showed up," she scoffs. "If I hadn't, you would've fucked her, and don't even try to deny that," she hisses.

"So, you're mad that I was going to sleep with Charlotte?" He questions and Julie lets out a groan.

"No, dammit Luke! I hate the way you treat girls, I mean, you act like it's completely okay to have sex with a girl and then you're on to the next one like it's nothing. Like they're just toys for you to use and then toss to the side once you've had your fun with them," she finishes with a huff, running her fingers through her hair.

"I don't treat you like that so why are you so mad about it?" Julie rubs her face with her hands in frustration.

"What do you treat me like, Luke? You act like I'm so super important and special to you, but every time I see you, you've got a fresh set of hickeys on your neck from some random chick. And okay, that's cool, we're just friends, but then you never treat me like I'm just your friend and I don't know how to feel, I don't know how you feel. I don't understand you." She looks away from him, blinking her eyes rapidly in an attempt to keep her from crying because she was starting to feel overly emotional once again.

It's silent between the two of them as Luke tries to come up with a response to what she'd just said. "To tell you the truth, Julie, I don't - I'm not sure how I feel about you," he admits quietly and she shifts her gaze over to meet his eyes. He knew he felt a lot different about her than he did most other girls, but he also knew he didn't need to be in any type of relationship with anyone because of their upcoming tour. That's why he continued being with different girls constantly. So he didn't get too attached to Julie.

But it wasn't working.

"That's fine, Luke," she shrugs. "I don't think we -"

"Don't say that, Julie," he huffs, shaking his head. "Just because I'm not sure about my feelings for you doesn't mean we have to stop hanging out or whatever."

"But, what's the point? It's not like this is going to go anywhere anyways. I just think it's better if we give each other time or something so you can figure out your feelings for me and I can try and determine how I feel about you," she breathes with another shrug, looking down at her fingers.

"If that's what you want," he mumbles with a nod.

"Just for a little bit, and you can do whatever you want, with whoever you want," she clarifies as Luke plays with his lip ring.

"How long is a little bit?" He asks hesitantly.

"I don't - I'm not sure, Luke, I guess however long it takes." She looks up to meet his eyes but he's looking away from her and he nods again.

"Well then," he sighs, "I'll see you around, princess." After giving her a quick, small smile, he turns and walks towards the exit of the store.
