CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

--

The tour ended up being harder on Julie than she expected.

She assumed it would be like the short period Luke had spent in the States, when they didn't have much time to talk but still managed to fit each other in for a good chunk of time each day.

It was nothing like that.

Julie was lucky if she heard from her boyfriend once every couple of days. She knew it wasn't his fault, what with the different time zones, rehearsals, and shows either daily or every other day, she didn't feel bitter or neglected. She just missed him.

And Luke always sounded guilty when he could only talk for a little bit, always apologizing profusely at the beginning of each phone call for not being able to call which she just waved off because she knew he'd call more if he could.

But with only a week until his return – though only for a few days before he had to go back to LA – she knew she could suck it up for the time being.

"Blue dress or black?" Julie's friend's voice pulled her away from her thoughts, causing her to glance up at the blonde.

"Blue," Mae answers while Julie stares at both dresses silently. Julie and Mae had met Olivia – or Liv as she demanded they called her – through Matthew and Noah (Noah may have had a tiny crush on her and Luke may have been very thrilled to hear that from Julie). Liv smiles approvingly, dropping the black dress on the edge of Mae's bed and heading to the bathroom.

"Aren't you two going to start getting ready? The boys'll be here in less than an hour," Liv questions from the bathroom, her voice echoing slightly.

"You just take a lot longer than us to get ready, so we're giving you a head start," Julie teases with a lazy smile on her face as she lays back on the bed. Liv laughs sarcastically, not bothering with a response. "Plus, it's Noah and Matthew; chances are they'll be late." Mae hums in agreement, beginning to play with the fabric of her bed comforter.

"Hey," she speaks up after the trio stays silent for a few minutes, "have you heard from Luke today?" Mae knew it'd been a few days since Julie talked to Luke and she was pretty bummed about it.

"We had a short conversation through text this morning," Julie answers, trying not to reveal any emotion through her words, but her best friend could see right through her.

"I'm sorry, babe," she sighs and Julie shrugs, making it clear she didn't want to further discuss the matter.

"You know what'll make you feel better?" Liv, ever the optimist, pipes up as she pokes her head out of the bathroom door. "Getting all dolled up and going out to have a good time." Her bright smile is contagious and Julie finds herself allowing the blonde to curl her brown hair.

"I call doing her make up!" Mae declares, shifting through Julie's dresses to find the navy blue one she was looking for. She smiles triumphantly as she pulls out the quarter sleeve dress, making her way to the bathroom. "And you must wear this." She hangs the dress up on the towel rack and Julie nods in approval.

"Whatever you say."

...

"Why did I let you people let me get this drunk?" Julie complains as she and Mae return to their apartment.

"You had the right to say no," Mae points out, opening the front door for Julie who slightly stumbles in, almost tripping over her heals. She turns to glare at her best friend because no, she did not have the right to say no as Mae and Liv kept ordering her more drinks to quote "get her mind off Luke" and chastising her for wasting money when she didn't drink each drink. "Oh, don't give me that look. We had fun and you know it." Julie doesn't bother arguing because she did have a pretty good time, though she wouldn't admit it.

"I wanna call Luke," she decides, leaving Mae and making her way to her own room. She has little hope he'll even answer as she puts the call on speaker phone and leaves it on her bathroom counter, beginning the process of getting ready for bed. Her heart jumps – from both surprise and joy – when it stops ringing and Luke's voices comes through her speakers.

"Hi, princess." She can hear the smile in his voice and she stops taking off her make up just to smile as well.

"Hi," she repeats quietly, "I didn't think you'd pick up. Aren't you guys practicing?" She questions and continues wiping the makeup off her face.

"Mhm," he hums, "but I asked the guys if I could stop to talk to you for a bit." She's unable to wipe the stupid grin off her face as her cheeks tint lightly. "I'm sorry I haven't been able to call," he sighs and she shrugs even though he can't see her.

"S'alright," she assures him, even if she wasn't happy about it. "I know you're busy." He sighs again, still upset at the fact he hasn't had time to talk to his own girlfriend. "Don't worry about it, Luke," she giggles quietly, dumping her makeup wipes in the trash. They'd had this conversation multiple times over, each of them basically saying the same things they always did. "So, where are you guys today?" She decides to change the subject.

"Indonesia," he answers, settling on one of the couches in the dressing room. "I wish you could see the shows."

"I see clips on Twitter." She tended to look online after each show to see how they did and she was more impressed as they went along; she hadn't really paid much attention to their performances before – due to the fact that there hadn't been many since Julie had met Luke – so she never really knew just how talented they were. She always told him how much she loved watching them perform and how talented she thought they were and Luke had never wanted to make someone outside of his family proud before Julie so hearing her praise their shows only made him want to do even better the next time.

"You know that's not what I mean," he laughs and she smiles lightly with another shrug.

"Well, that's as close as it's gonna get until your Australian shows." Luke lets out a childish groan and she laughs in amusement, shaking her head.

"This isn't – what?" He stops mid-sentence and Julie hears someone call his name in the background. "Dude, it's only been, like, two minutes." She can hear more talking as she sits up on her counter, swinging her legs back and forth and chewing on her lower lip. He grumbles something under his breath that she can't pick up on before sighing. "I'm sorry, babe, I gotta go." Although she knew this was coming she feels the same heavy disappointment she felt every time he had to leave.

"Alright," she answers shortly, her eyes stinging.

"I'm sorry," he says again. "I can try and call later?" She knew this wasn't going to happen but it's the thought that counts.

"Okay." She licks her lips and hopes off the counter. "Bye." She brings the phone down without the 'I love you' she always gave him and hangs up the phone.

Maybe things just weren't the same anymore, and maybe she just needed to accept that.
