CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

"I need your help," Julie sighs, looking up from her phone screen to look at Noah.

"You do seem bothered," he observes, "What's up?"

"It's about Luke." She runs her fingers through her hair as Noah raises an eyebrow in confusion.

"I thought you two were done?"

"That's what I thought," she chuckles humorlessly, shaking her head. "But he came by the other day, asking for another chance, and I don't know," she pauses and shrugs. "I couldn't say no. I mean, I didn't say yes, but," her voice trails as she shrugs once more, "yeah."

"Well," Noah ponders for a few moments before speaking up again, "what'd he say?"

"Basically that he wants to be in an actual relationship this time and that I could trust him," she summarizes shortly. "He also kissed me." After a short period of silence Noah is the one to shrug.

"Seems like it depends on how you feel. Do you want to be with him or not?" He questions.

"Of course I want to be with him," she admits, flipping her phone in her hands a few times. "I just don't know if that's best for me, you know? I'm kinda scared. Trust issues, I guess."

"Trust issues you're completely entitled to, Julie, because of all the shit he's pulled on you," he reminds her.

"I know," she groans, leaning her head back against the headboard of her bed. "He seemed so sincere, I know he meant what he said, I just don't know how long he's gonna mean it for." She pauses, thinking over what she just said. "That didn't really make sense." She shakes her head.

"I get what you mean, you don't know how long he's gonna stay sincere about this?" He guesses and she nods slowly.

"Yeah, I guess." She lets out a quiet breath. "I hate him," she huffs, burying her head in her hands.

"No, you don't," he chuckles softly, "you're just frustrated."

"Could you just let me pretend I hate him for a second?" She lifts her head slightly to give him a glare which only heightens his amusement and his smile widens. "What are you smiling for?" She can't help but smile back, letting her hands drop back in her lap and leaning against her headboard again.

"Nothing, you're just entertaining." He shrugs with the same boyish smile on her face and she rolls her eyes without responding.

"You know what I should do?" She speaks up again after the two of them sat in a comfortable silence for a short while. When Noah responds with a quiet 'hmm?' she continues, "I should just become a nun and forget men. The only man in my life from now on is God," she decides with a playful smile.

"And what about me and Matthew?" He challenges, raising his eyebrows.

"You two are barely men," she snorts and he mocks hurt with a hand on his chest for dramatic effect. She lets out a quiet giggle and goes back to scrolling through Twitter on her phone.

"When did Luke come talk to you?" Noah randomly questions. "Like, how long have you left him waiting?"

"Four days," she answers, looking back up at him. "That's why I need an answer to give to him soon or he might assume my answer is no and I just want nothing to do with him anymore."
