On Tuesday at school, I walked in the doors with a spring in my step. So far, there had been no trouble with Madison, Ian, or Fletcher this week. My friends were being happier, and Christmas break was less than two days away. Tomorrow was a half day and I could hardly contain myself.
I couldn't focus on English in first period that morning. I kept thinking of yesterday at lunch when Zoe finally cracked that crooked smile of hers that I haven't seen in so long. I didn't know what it was, I guess we've all just been in poor spirits for so long, that there was nowhere to go but up. Though, I wish Stella had been there to catch up with all of us. I tried calling her yesterday but she wouldn't answer. The bell rang.
For second period, I had European history. I would be in the same class as Zoe, but she was taking American history. At least we still got to see each other since those rooms were on the same hallway. Too bad Stella was all the way over in the foreign language wing.
"Hey, Kit Kat," I heard Zoe's voice, but I didn't see Zoe. Then I remembered her "dress code."
"Hey, hot stuff," I tried to stifle giggle. She was wearing a solid blue t shirt and some plain dark wash jeans. And flat shoes. She even had the same natural makeup as yesterday.
"Oh, don't even," this made me lose control and just start full on laughing. "If that bitch Madison didn't hate me so much, I wouldn't have to dress like plain Jane. Ugh, and I'm only doing it cause now my mom thinks there's actually a dress code. I don't even care about being on the basketball team," she gestured to her outfit, "this much anymore." She folded her arms and pouted while waiting for me to compose myself.
"Haha, what did Stella say?" I knew the two of them had biology together.
"She wasn't here again today. Would she answer her phone for you last night?"
"No... do you think something's wrong?" I frowned.
"Nah, she gets like this sometimes when she's sick. She's too tired and doesn't pick up her phone, and just when you think she's fallen off the face of the Earth, she starts spamming you again like normal. You know how her stomach's always hurting? It's probably just that." Zoe rambled a bit which told me she was worried too. But I couldn't think of a better explanation than hers.
"You're right, it's probably nothing. Hey, I have to get to class. Later?"
"Yeah. See you at lunch," Zoe gave me a side hug and headed into her class room. It looked like she walked more awkwardly without her platform shoes on.

At lunch, we were all just peacefully talking, when Fletcher Ramsey decides to come over and ruin everything.
"Hello, beautifuls. What, no Queen of the Undead today?" Zoe was sitting net to me and I felt her tense and clench her fists. She turned to face Fletcher. "WHOA!" he practically yelled at the sight of Zoe's face. Then he just started laughing. "Sean, come over here, buddy, Zigler is finally putting in some effort like the other chicks!" Sean Miller sauntered over from the jock table.
