Rain's POV

"Servius must be a fool to make this ball a .masquerade. Does he really want to be killed?" I said as i entered the castle easily. No guard stopped us when they saw us in our robes and masks.

"The man is an eccentric." Alistair shrugged.

"Which makes him a fool."

We entered the hall. There was music and dancing. But not only that there were some engaging in orgies or sex in a few dark corners of the hall. I inhaled the scents of the room. Vampire, blood, sex, wine and even human can be smelled.

"There are humans here." I whispered to Alistair.

"The blood slaves. They are the source of blood during the balls. Repulsive if you ask me. Humans shouldnt be treated as a source of food but Servius thinks they are beneath us which I totally disagree." He said with a sneer as he saw a certain masked vampire grab a frail human girl in chains and started on drinking her blood on her neck. Another vampire came up and drank from the other side of her neck. And all this time the human didnt complain. Her eyes were glazed and unfocused, she was drunk.

I looked at Alistair. I know that he was a kind man for a vampire but I never knew that he consider humans as equals. He saw my look and explained.

"My mother was human before my father turned her. It was a good thing she was her Bloodmate or they wouldnt be able to have me and my brothers." He shrugged.

I looked around and studied the different vampires. Looking for Servius and also looking at the different entrances and exits of the hall. There two doors where servant go in and out and a door where guards would carry or drag new blood slaves. After doing this i looked at Alistair who came to me and gave me a cup. I sniffed it and found out it was wine mixed with blood.

"Have you sent the message?" I asked him.

"Yes. Now all we have to do is wait for Servius and enjoy the ball."

I grunted while drinking. I hated to wait while doing this. So i made idle conversation while watching the movements of every vampire in the room.

"You said your mother was your father's bloodmate. What do you mean by that?" I asked.

"Do you know what soulmates are?" He asked me and I nodded.

"Its the other half of your soul. The love of your life or something like that. I dont really believe in it." I shrugged.

"Well you should because that is the most basic law of nature for the supernaturals. Werewolves have mates, Witches or Wizards have beloveds in the case of vampires its bloodmates. You can change a vampire through a bite but a human turned vampire who is a bloodmate can give birth to a vampire. Thats how lineages can be formed. Turned vampires are like babies to their makers but bloodmates are their lovers." He explained.

I suddenly felt dread in my stomach. Could it be that girl was my bloodmate? Impossible, she turned me so that i could kill Servius. She is maker not my lover. I returned my attention to the dias where the throne is and i Servius dressed in very gaudy robes and he was drinking from a woman's neck at the same time fondling her breast. You could see that he has no intention to stop because the woman was growing weaker and her heartbeat is getting slower. Behind him in the dark corner i noticed a girl, a bit younger than me. She was dressed in servants clothes and has a scarf around her neck. But what caught my attention is the hatred burning in her eyes as she looked at Servius. I ignored her looking out the window and notice that the clouds were covering a full moon. I looked at Alistair and he understood what i was trying to say with my eyes. He nodded in understanding.

"It is time." I grinned.
