"Welcome back!" I stated as he smiled at me. He hugged me tight like he had missed me.
"I missed you." He said as he hugged me tighter. Well that answered my question. He pulled away an looked at me weird. "What's in the shirt?" He asked as I looked towards my house where my parents were looking out the window. I waved to them as they waved back. I grabbed Jake's wrist and we began to walk down the street. We were about 20 feet down the street when we finally stopped. "What are we doing?" He asked me as I sat down on the curb. I looked up at him and patted the ground next to me. He took the hint and sat beside me. I took the box out making his eyes go wide. "What is that?" He asked as I unlocked it.
"It has information about my real dad." I stated as I looked at the box.
"Wait, I thought you said that guy who was at the hotel with you was your dad?" He asked as he was completely confused. I nodded my head.
"That's what I thought. But when I started unpacking all my stuff I came across this box. Apparently Mike is not my real dad." I explained as I opened the box and took out the book. "This book tells me everything I need to know about my real dad. It even has a real birth certificate for me." I said as I took out the birth certificate and showed it to him. I watched as he read it. His eyes got wide.
"Wow. Have you talked to your mom about any of this yet?" He asked handing back the birth certificate. I handed him the book to read through.
"No I haven't. How do you bring this up to your mother? 'Oh hey mom, I found this box you were obviously hiding from me but I found it anyway' I can't do that. She wouldn't want me to go and find him." I said as he stopped reading to look at me.
"Your what?!" He said looking at me like he was worried.
"I want to go look for him. I need to find my father. I need to feel complete." I said as I avoided eye contact with him.
"Your not serious are you?" He asked as I didn't answer him. "You are really going to go find him?" He asked again as I stood up taking the book back.
"Yes. Don't try and stop me." I said as I began to walk away from him. He chased after me.
"I'm not going to stop you. I understand why. Just what do you think your parents will say if they find out your gone?" He asked as I stopped walking to look at him.
"They won't find out. I have snuck out before and they never found out. I'm not going to be leaving anytime soon. I still need to find out where he is." I said as he scratched the back of his neck.
"If you go. I go." He stated as I looked at him in shock.
"What?" I asked not believing in what I just heard.
"If you go to try and find your dad, I'm going to go with you." He said again. I shook my head.
"Why do you want to come with me?" I asked him as I raised an eyebrow at him. I began to walk back to my place with him by my side.
"Because I want to be by your side in case things don't turn out the way you want them to." He said as we reached our houses. I sighed.
"Okay. Fine you can come with me if or when I go." I said giving in. He nodded his head. "Did you want to come inside so I can do some research on my father?" I asked as he nodded his head. We walked into my house.
"Oh hello. What are you two up to?" My mom asked as she was in the living room holding up paint splotches.
"We are going upstairs. What are you doing?" I asked as we slowly made our way towards the stairs.
"I'm looking at the colours to paint the living room. I want something with a pop." My mom said as she held up a reddish paint sample and then a sort of purple paint sample. "Which one do you think?" My mom asked as she turned to face us. I looked at Jake who looked back at me.
"Defiantly go with the red. It goes very good with the green in the dining room." Jake stated as my mom looked at it. She smiled.
"Thank you Jake." My mom said as she put the paint samples down.
"Alright so we are going upstairs. Bye!" I called out as she walked into the kitchen.
"Door open!" She called back as I rolled my eyes.
"Okay." I said as I walked up the stairs followed by Jake. I walked into my room leaving the door open. My room was pink and blue with little bits of purple. He walked in admiring all the stuff I had in my room."Do you like my room?" I asked shyly as I rocked on my heels. He nodded his head.
"I don't usually like pink and blue together but this is nice." He said smiling as I smiled back. I walked over to my desk setting the box down on the ground and putting the book on my desk. I pulled up my spinning chair while Jake came up beside me.
"Did you want a chair?" I asked as he nodded his head. I got up and walked down the hall into the spare room to grab a chair. I came back in to see him reading the book on my bed. I set the chair down as I sat back down turning in my laptop. Once it was loaded Jake came and sat beside me. I went to google.
"What exactly are you going to look up?" He asked me as he put the book down and leaned back in his chair. I bit my lip as I began to type.
"I guess I'll just type in his name." I said as I typed in 'James Marine.' I had a lot of results.
"I don't think that worked. 1,323,467 results of James Marine." Jake said laughing slightly. I shook my head.
"Okay let's try his full name." I said typing in 'James Allan Marine.' The results were still very large.
"Why don't you type in James Marine, FBI?" Jake asked as I shrugged my shoulder typing it in. This brought up pictures and articles. I found a few pictures of what was in the box. I also found a few articles on how he was a good FBI agent and how he became a criminal. I clicked on one that said 'James Marine: FBI Agent Resigns.'
"This must be interesting." I said as I clicked on the link. It brought me to an article about his resigning.
"What does it say?" Jake asked moving closer to me.
"It says James Marine left the agency with no warning when girlfriend Tammy Peters went into labour." I said out loud as Jake stayed quiet.
"That's your mom?" He asked pointing to the picture of a lady who looked very similar to my mom. I nodded my head.
"It says here that the baby was named after the father and the city she was born in." I narrowed my eyebrows as I opened up the book to look at my birth certificate. It said I was born in New Jersey. I understood a little bit more. I finished the article and began to click on some more.
"We still can't find where he lives though." Jake said as I erased my search and tried again. This time I typed in 'James Marine FBI Agent: Where is he now?' Once I pressed search that brought me to a very helpful source that told me exactly where to find him or at least the agency. I copied and pasted it to Microsoft Word where I printed it off along with a picture of him. "Now what?" He asked as I shrugged my shoulders.
"Now we have to plan a small trip."
