"Jersey?" He said in amazement as he was probably just as in shock as I was.
"Hi James." I said as I felt my throat go dry. He pulled me in for a hug. I was taken back by his sudden movements but as soon as my head hit his chest I felt as if I belonged there. I wrapped my arms around him as I took a deep breath of relief. I forgot all about Jake for a few minutes before he coughed making us pull away from each other.
"Come on in." James said as we walked in slowly. He shut the door behind us.
"Hi sir, I'm Jake. Jersey's friend." Jake said holding his hand out for James to shake which he gladly did. I looked around at his house. He had pictures of me all over his house. Pictures of my mom too. He even had a few pictures of Mike with Liam and Nina.
"Here Jersey, Jake, Sit. Please." James said as he motioned to the couch. I nodded my head and made my way over to the couch. He sat down on the chair that was beside the couch turning it slightly so he could see us. "You probably have a lot of questions." He said as I nodded my head slowly. "Ask away. Ask me everything on your mind." He said smiling as he leaned back. I took a deep breath. I was trying to find questions in my head but I couldn't find words to say.
"I-I-um-can I have some water?" I asked as he nodded his head.
"Anything." He said as he got up into the kitchen. He came back in with three classes for Jake, him and I. I took a sip of the water taking a breath after I set it down on the table. "Better?" He asked smiling slightly. I nodded my head.
"Thank you." Jake said as James smiled.
"How did you know it was me when you opened the door?" I blurted out. James smiled and leaned forward.
"You look exactly like me. I also am still in contact with your mom. She sends me pictures of all your greatest accomplishments if you haven't noticed." He said pointing to some of the pictures. I nodded my head.
"I was really scared to find you honestly." I admitted as he nodded his head.
"I know you were. I was scared for the day you would come and find me to." He admitted. I raised an eye brow at him.
"You knew I would come find you?" I asked him as he nodded his head.
"When your mom met Mike, she sent me an email all about him. I knew that if you were anything like me, you would realize he wasn't your dad. You aren't a lot like your mom and you defiantly are nothing like him. I knew you would find out eventually." He said as I nodded my head understanding. "How exactly did you find me?" He asked as he leaned forward.
"I found a box that was labeled 'Jersey's Keep out!' When I opened it there was a book all about you and pictures too. I ended up looking you up on the Internet and found the address to your agency. So Jake and I hopped on a bus to your agency in Phoenix where some guy gave us your address." I explained as he nodded his head. He smiled wide.
"Was this guy kind of tall, with white hair?" He asked as I looked at Jake. We both nodded our heads. He laughed a bit. "Yeah you ran into my old pal Lenny. He was my mentor when I was a beginner agent." James said as I nodded my head. "You probably have a lot more other questions." James said as I nodded my head.
"I just need to know one thing." I said as I leaned forward. He looked at me waiting for me to continue. "Why did you resign? You obviously were a good agent. So why did you resign? That book never really told me why." I said as he smiled at me. He leaned forward and pointed at me.
"You. You were the reason I resigned." He said as I backed up a bit.
"Why me? Why did I make you resign?" I asked as he smiled. He stood up and held out his hand for me to grab. I looked at Jake as I took his hand. He brought me into the kitchen where he opened a drawer. Inside was a baby book. He flipped through to a picture of me smiling as a baby while he kissed my forehead.
"This was the day you were born. The nurse said you shouldn't show emotion until you were a couple weeks old. As soon as the nurse picked you up you were crying and then you were placed into my arms and you calmed down right away. I kissed your head and you smiled. I knew after that I never wanted to leave you in anyway. I wanted to be that father, that was by your side every moment of your life. So I resigned to be a good father." He said as he looked as if he was about to cry."Then why did you leave me?" I asked him quietly. He looked up at me with tears brimming his eyes.
"I wouldn't have left if I wasn't classified as dangerous to everybody else who knew what happened. Your mom didn't believe that it was me, but the judge and everyone else did. My agency didn't believe it either, but that didn't matter to eye witnesses who seen me do it. I am really sorry." He said as he broke down crying. I looked at Jake as I rubbed James' back. I hugged him tight.
"I'm not mad at you. I'm not upset with you either. I understand why. I just wish I could have had you in my life a little bit more." I said as he took a deep breath.
"Did you not have eye witnesses to prove you weren't there?" Jake asked. James looked up at Jake and shook his head.
"My only eye witness was Kersey but she was just a baby. Your mom went to go get groceries that day so she left me at home with you. They said I didn't have any proof of not being with you. So they sent me to jail for 10 years." He said as he took a deep breath. "But I did try to stay in your life. After I got out of jail, I tried to come see you but they wouldn't let me know where you were. Eventually I found your mom's email and I stayed in contact with her. She never told me where you were but she sent me pictures. I tried. I really did." James said as I nodded my head. I yawned as he smiled slight up at me. "Are you two tired?" He asked. I nodded my head as Jake did the same.
"We haven't really had a proper sleep in a few days." Jake stated as he stretched. James smiled as he motioned us upstairs.
"I only have one other bedroom so you two can stare if you'd like. If not I can sleep on the couch and Jersey you can have my bed." He said as he brought us into a bedroom with a double bed.
"We are okay with sharing a bed. Thank you." Jake said as I smiled at him. James nodded his head.
"Bathroom is just down the hall. And I can wash your clothes." James said as I smiled slightly. He left us alone for a bit as I sat on the bed. Jake came to sit beside me.
"Is he what you expected?" Jake asked as I smiled widely. I stood up and hugged him.
"I feel complete now." I said excitedly as I hugged him tight. He smiled as he hugged me back. I let him go. "I think I'm going to have a shower." I said as he smiled nodding his head. I grabbed my backpack which had all my clothes and made my way down the wall. I walked into the bathroom and darted the shower. After a few minutes of being in the warm shower I was down. I grabbed this t-shirt that I had. It was my lucky t-shirt. It was a bit big on me but it meant a lot to me. I didn't know where I got it from but every time I wore it I felt really happy. I put it on along with some sweatpants and walked out of the bathroom feeling refreshed. I didn't notice where James' bedroom was until I heard the tv on but it wasn't in the living room. I set my backpack down as I walked towards the slightly opened door. I knocked on the door.
"Come in." I heard as I slowly peeked my head into the room. "Oh Jersey. Hey that's my shirt." He stated as I looked down at my shirt.
"Really? I never knew where I got it from." I said as I looked at him.
"Your mom took it from me when we were told to go our separate ways. Anyway anything I can help you with?" He asked as I yawned shaking my head. He stood up as I walked over to him. I hugged him. He seemed taken back by it but he hugged me anyway. "What's this for?" He asked as I yawned again.
"For answering all my questions." I whispered as I shut my eyes hugging him tighter. I felt him shuffle as I felt myself be placed on the bed. I opened my eyes as I looked up to see him staring at the tv. He looked down to see me staring at him. He kissed the top of my head.
"You and Jake are very close. Do I need to be worried?" He asked as I shook my head burying my head deeper in his chest.
"No. We are just friends. Well maybe. I don't really know." I said yawning halfway through my sentence. He laughed slightly.
"Go to sleep." He said as he kissed my head.
"You'll be here when I wake up?" I asked as he smiled.
"Yes. I'm not leaving you again." He whispered as he kissed my head. I closed my eyes. I gripped his shirt tight. "Are you okay?" He asked.
"I just need to feel safe to sleep." I said as I listened to his heartbeat and gripped his shirt again. He placed his hand on my head playing with my hair making me relax.
"Don't worry Jersey. You are safe here."
