Chapter 20
The tree was easier to climb the second time.
My parents would be beyond irascible if they found out that I had snuck out again. I just couldn't stay in my room, not being able to fall asleep, staring at my ceiling. I couldn't stay and have everything going through my mind, over and over until all I saw were flashes of faces. Jeremy as he pushed me against the wall, my mother as she asked me why I had gotten drunk, Evan as he stared straight through and into my soul, and Hunter as he confessed to me all about how his dad was really like.
His words circled in my head like a broken record, a cry in the night. IleftIleftIleft. He left. Who knew this beside me? Was this how he felt when he found out that no one else knew about me being raped? Not knowing what to do, yet yearning to help in some way, anyway.
And that's why I snuck out; I had to see him.
I knocked on his window, just like I had done weeks ago when I had come to him after the nightmare I had had. He came quickly this time, as if he had been expecting me. In just a few seconds, I saw his face, smiling softly as he gently opened the window, leaving nothing separating us. He was dressed much the same as last time in a faded dark blue t-shirt with an Abercrombie logo and boxer shorts. His hair was wild and sticking up in different directions. I wondered if I had woken him.
"You make sneaking into guy's bedrooms at night a habit of yours?" he joked.
I laughed; shocked by how naturally it came when I was around him. "Sorry if I'm unwelcome here."
His smile grew. "Never."
Hiding my flushed face, I climbed through the window and into his bedroom, wrapping my arms around myself and feeling nervous all of a sudden. He closed the window behind me and I turned around to face him. "Hey," I said and he grinned.
"Hey." He moved closer to me and I let him, feeling completely safe. He uncrossed my arms and held onto my hand, entwining our fingers. His movements were slow, reassuring. He was not going to hurt me.
I couldn't stop looking at him. "I'm sorry; I don't really make appointments when I do this,"
He pulled me closer to him and skimmed his hands over my hips, intoxicating. "It's always a nice surprise." he whispered, leaning in and burying his face in my neck.
I closed my eyes, holding back my snarling emotions. "Hunter," I warned, placing a hand on his shoulder.
He sighed and his hot breath on my neck sent my knees shaking with want. "I know, I know," he said, pulling away from me. "I just can't seem to help myself around you. I want you, Violet. And I wish I could show you just how much."
I stopped him then, cupping his face in my hands and looking him in the eye, amused by his surprised expression. "Then do it," I whispered, making myself taller by standing on my toes. "Show me." And then I placed my lips on his, no holding back and no pulling away.
He didn't respond at first and I was afraid that I had done the wrong thing, but then he dug my fingers in my hair and took the lead with his lips, dancing across mine. He moaned, or maybe it was me. At that moment, I couldn't focus on anything but Hunter's lips on mine.
